Jam at Registration

A "Jam at Registration" message may indicate a dirty or blocked paper path or the
failure of one or more components, resulting in jams in the Registration Chute
Assembly (PL9.1.6) or it's proximity.
Due to the short paper path, this jam can be caused by several components within the
printer. The initial actions outlined below may provide some basic information
needed to identify the source of the problem. After completion of the Initial Actions,
use the Troubleshooting Procedure Table to isolate and correct the specific problem.
Initial Actions
1.
Query the customer about the types of paper being used. If it is not on the
recommended media list, attempt to determine if this could be contributing to the
jamming. Recycled, multi-purpose or copier papers tend to contaminate the paper
path (rollers, sensors etc.) and may necessitate more frequent cleaning. Constant
use of special papers such as labels or business cards can also contribute to a
higher jam rate.
2.
Make sure the correct tray loading and setup procedures are followed (securing
the tray backstop and guides, selecting the correct paper type at the Control
Panel, fanning the paper, etc.).
3.
Make sure the printer is plugged directly into an electrical outlet. Using extension
cords or a power strip is not recommended.
4.
Make every attempt to establish a jam rate prior to starting any work. If possible,
print a Printer Status page or usage profile report and note the page count
between jams.
5.
Try to determine if the jamming is occurring in one tray but not another. This will
help identify any dirty or defective parts.
6.
Clear the paper path of any existing jams and paper debris. Start at the Turn
Chute (PL3.1.2) and work up to the Registration Chute Assembly (PL9.1.6.)
7.
Using a slightly damp (water only) lint free cloth, clean the Paper Feed Rollers
(PL2.1.2/ PL3.3.23) and Pick Rollers (PL3.3.3) in the paper tray and tray slot.
8.
Clean the Registration Chute Assembly's rubber roller. The roller should be
black and pliable.
9.
Remove the Registration Chute Assembly and clean the OHP (PL9.1.12) and
Registration (PL9.1.8) Sensors and surrounding area of paper dust and debris.
10.
Check for excessive waste toner around the Transfer Roller (PL8.1.12) area.
Replace the Transfer Roller if needed.
11.
Test to determine if the jam has cleared and the jam rate has improved.
