Placing the heating system in operation

This section describes the commissioning procedure when using the
controller's standard module.
To ensure safe operation of the heating system and to test specific
performance indicators, the burner/gas valve unit installed in the boiler
have been factory-tested as described in detail in ANSI Z21.13 and CGA
4.9.
DANGER: Risk of fatal injury from electric current when
appliance is opened up!
▶ Before opening the boiler: Disconnect the heating
system from the electrical power supply by means of
the emergency shutoff switch or the appropriate
circuit breaker on the main electrical panel.
▶ Take measures to ensure that the heating system
cannot be accidentally reactivated.
▶ After completing the work described below, fill out the
commissioning report ( Section 7.20, page 39).
▶ A burner contaminated during building work must be cleaned
before commissioning.
▶ Inspect flue and combustion air piping and the openings for
supplying combustion air and ventilation
( Section 5, page 15).
CAUTION: Risk of boiler damage due to excessive dust
and airborne debris levels!
▶ Never operate the boiler in very dusty conditions,
e.g. if building work is taking place in the installation
room.
▶ An air filter must be installed if the supply of
combustion air contains large quantities of dust (e.g.
from unpaved roads and paths or dusty workplaces
such as quarries, mines, etc.) or airborne seeds from
plants.
WARNING: Risk of boiler damage from contaminated
combustion air.
▶ Do not use cleaning agents that contain chlorine or
halogenated hydrocarbons (e.g. in spray cans,
solvents and cleaning agents, paints, glues).
▶ Never use or store chlorinated cleaning agents or
halogenated hydrocarbons in the installation room.
Read the following carefully before switching on so as to avoid
potentially fatal situations:
DANGER: Risk of fatal injury in the event of failure to
follow the commissioning instructions and subsequent
incorrect operation.
If the information in this manual is not followed exactly,
a fire or explosion may result causing property damage,
personal injury or loss of life.
▶ It is imperative that the commissioning instructions
are followed!

Placing the heating system in operation
DANGER: Risk of explosion from escaping gas!
▶ No open fire.
▶ Do not smoke.
▶ Prevent sparks.
Do not operate electrical switches, including
telephones, plugs or doorbells!
▶ Turn off the gas cock ( page 40).
▶ Open windows and doors!
▶ Do not operate any electrical switches.
▶ Warn other occupants of the building.
▶ Leave the building.
▶ From outside the building, call gas supply
company, heating contractor or fire department.
DANGER: Risk of fatal injury due to water damage!
▶ The appliance must not be used if any part of it has
been under water.
▶ Have the appliance checked by a qualified service
contractor.
▶ Any parts of the controller or the gas valve that have
been under water must be replaced by a qualified
service contractor.
7.1

Checking heating system operating pressure

▶ Before commissioning, check the water pressure in the heating
system and adjust if necessary.
▶ Set the red needle on the temperature/pressure gauge to the
required operating pressure of at least 15 psi (applies to sealed
heating systems).
CAUTION: Risk of system damage due to scale
formation in the boiler.
▶ Refer to the information provided in the
"7747010721_GB312_Water Quality
Requirements.pdf".
CAUTION: Risk of system damage from excessively high
temperatures!
If you fill the heating system when it is hot, the resulting
thermal stresses can cause stress cracks. The boiler will
then leak.
▶ Fill the heating system only when it is cold (the
supply temperature should be no more than 104 °F).
▶ Pay attention to the water quality as specified in the
"7747010721_GB312_Water Quality
Requirements.pdf", and record the volume and
quality of the water used to fill the system.
▶ Check the water quality annually.
