Sequence.
Install Push Rods and Rocker Arms
NOTE: Push rods should always be installed in the
same position as before disassembly.
1. Note the mark or tag identifying the push rod as
either intake or exhaust and cylinder #1 or #2. Dip
the ends of the push rods in engine oil and install,
making sure that each push rod ball seats in its
hydraulic lift er socket. See Figure 10-37.

2. Apply grease to the contact surfaces of the rocker
arms and rocker arm pivots. Install the rocker
arms and rocker arm pivots on one cylinder head,
and start the two hex fl ange screws. See Figure
10-38.

3. Torque the hex fl ange screws to 11.9 N·m
(105 in. lb.). Repeat for the other rocker arm.
4. Use a spanner wrench or rocker arm lift ing tool
(see Section 2) to lift the rocker arms and position
the push rods underneath. See Figure 10-39.
5. Repeat the above steps for the remaining
cylinder. Do not interchange parts from the
cylinder heads.

6. Rotate the crankshaft to check for free operation
of the valve train. Check the clearance between
the valve spring coils at full lift . Minimum
allowable clearance is 0.25 mm (0.010 in.).
Check Assembly
Important: Rotate the crankshaft a minimum of two
revolutions to check longblock assembly and overall
proper operation.
