Disassembly
3. Once the valve spring is compressed, remove the
valve spring keepers, then remove the following
items. See Figures 8-59 and 8-60:
● Valve spring retainers
● Valve springs
● Valve spring caps
● Intake and exhaust valve (mark position)
● Valve stem and seals (intake and exhaust)
NOTE: These engines use valve stem seals on the
intake and exhaust valves. Use a new seal
whenever the valve is removed or if the seal
is deteriorated or damaged in any way. Never
reuse an old seal.

4. Repeat the above procedure for the other cylinder
head. Do not interchange parts from one cylinder
head to the other.

Remove Fan and Flywheel
1. Remove the four shoulder bolts securing the fan
if still att ached and remove fan. See Figure 8-61.

2. Use a fl ywheel strap wrench or holding tool (see
Section 2) to hold the fl ywheel and loosen the
hex fl ange screw securing the fl ywheel to the
crankshaft . See Figure 8-62.
NOTE: Always use a fl ywheel strap wrench or
holding tool to hold the fl ywheel when
loosening or tightening the fl ywheel
screw. Do not use any type of bar or
wedge to hold the fl ywheel. Use of such
tools could cause the fl ywheel to become
cracked or damaged.

3. Remove the hex fl ange screw and washer.
4. Use a puller to remove the fl ywheel from the
crankshaft . See Figure 8-63.
