Install Flywheel
WARNING: Damaging Crankshaft and
Flywheel Can Cause Personal Injury!
Using improper procedures to install the fl ywheel can crack
or damage the crankshaft and/or fl ywheel. This not only
causes extensive engine damage, but can also cause personal
injury, since broken fragments could be thrown from the
engine. Always observe and use the following precautions
and procedures when installing the fl ywheel.
NOTE: Before installing the fl ywheel make sure
the crankshaft taper and the fl ywheel hub
are clean, dry, and completely free of any
lubricants. The presence of lubricants can
cause the fl ywheel to be over stressed and
damaged when the hex fl ange screw is
torqued to specifi cations. See Figures 10-21
and 10-22.

1. Install the woodruff key into the keyway of the
crankshaft . Make sure that the key is properly
seated and parallel with the shaft taper.
NOTE: Make sure the fl ywheel key is installed
properly in the keyway. The fl ywheel can
become cracked or damaged if the key is not
properly installed.
2. Install the fl ywheel onto the crankshaft being
careful not to shift the woodruff key. See Figure
10-23.

3. Install the hex fl ange screw and washer.
4. Use a fl ywheel strap wrench or holding tool
to hold the fl ywheel. Torque the hex fl ange
screw securing the fl ywheel to the crankshaft to
71.6 N·m (52.8 ft . lb.). See Figure 10-24.
