6-7. Troubleshooting

The troubleshooting information for the HP 16500A/16501A consists of flowcharts, signal information for
the color module, power supply voltages, and interface troubleshooting. Troubleshooting an instrument
failure to the assembly level can be accomplished using the troubleshooting flowcharts provided in this
section. The flowcharts refer to other tests and tables to help you isolate problems.
Equipment Required
A voltmeter, a system disk, a second formatted disk, a disk with test software, and the RS-232C
connector are required to perform the tests. Also, a state analyzer is required for interface
troubleshooting. Refer to table 1-2 for the recommended test equipment. Before performing any tests,
install the RS-232C loopback connector, insert the system disk into one disk drive, and insert the
formatted disk into the other disk drive.
Troubleshooting Flowcharts
The flowcharts are organized into the Main, Expansion Frame, Color Module, System Start, and Power
Supply troubleshooting flowcharts. Also, flowcharts are included for the RS-232C, HIL, Disk, and
Intermodule Tests.
Descriptions of the power-up tests and the Mainframe Tests are provided earlier in this section.
The power-up tests are automatically performed every time power is applied to the instrument. The
results of the tests are reported on the screen. When the tests pass, the information printed on the
instrument screen during the power-up self tests includes the following:
