check box and click OK. The same document, without benefit of local
fonts, is shown in the lower heading example of Figure 37b.
Figure 37b
Unless you have permission, a locked font (upper heading) is
replaced by a default font (lower heading)—the Viking is purely decorative!
The difference is clear. The font used—Everyday Formula—is a locked
font and can't be embedded. If I sent someone this document, my spiffy
headings would be replaced by something far tamer.
You can check the Document Properties for confirmation. Choose
File > Document Properties and select the Fonts tab to show the font
information (Figure 37c). The information for the Everyday Formula
font is as you would expect: The dialog states that the actual font used
is Adobe Sans MM.

The Document Properties
dialog lists information for the embedded,
subset, and substituted fonts.
#37:
Choosing and Using Fonts
Embedding and
Subsetting
Embedding means that
information about all the
characters in the fonts is
automatically attached
for use after the document
is converted to a PDF.
Subsetting refers to a
percentage of the font's
information based on the
number of characters used
in the document.
When you embed a font,
the text in the document
using that font displays cor-
rectly. Preserve the content
precisely using subsetting.
It's a good idea to subset at
100%—the difference in
file size is hardly noticeable.
If you use half of the pos-
sible characters in a font and
subsetting is set to 100%,
all your information is used.
If you use half the possible
characters in a font and
have subsetting set at 25%,
other characters may be
substituted.
Subsetting is important for
documents sent to a print
service or press. When the
document is printed, it uses
the information in your
document, not that of the
printer's version of the font,
ensuring precise results.
