When jump starting or charging the battery,
never connect the negative ground cable to
the battery negative post because the battery
manager system must be able to detect the
battery's state of charge . Always connect the
negative ground cable to the negat ive ground
post of the battery manager control unit .

Both jump start cables must be connected in the
correct order!

The procedure described below for connecting
jumper cables is intended to prov ide a jump start
for your vehicle.
Vehicle with discharged battery :
.. Set the parking brake and select the P (Park)
selector lever position.
.. Switch the ignition and all electr ical equipment
off .
Emergency

Connecting the positive cable (red) to the
positive terminal
.. Open the cover for jump starting ¢ page 232,
fig . 166.
.. Secure an end of the red jump start cable to the
positive terminal

.,. Secure the other end
of
the red jump start ca-
ble to the pos itive terminal @ on the battery
p roviding the current @ .
Connecting the negative cable (black) to the
negative terminal
.,. Secure one end of the black jump start cab le to
the negative terminal @ on the battery that is
providing the current @ .
.,. Secure the other end of the black jump start ca-
ble to the negative terminal © at the jump
start connection in your vehicle @ .
Starting the engine
.,. Start the engine in the veh icle giving the charge
and let it run at idle.
.. Now start the engine in the vehicle with the
dead battery and wait two to three minutes un-
til it "runs smoothly" .
.,. If the engine does not start, stop the starting
procedure after 10 seconds and then repeat it
after approx imately 30 seconds .
.,. In the veh icle that is being jump started, switch
the heater fa n and rear window defroster on to
reduce any voltage peaks that may occur when
disconnecting the jumper cables. The head-
lights must be switched off .
.. Remove the cables when the engines are run-
ning. Remove them in reverse order from the
way they were installed.
.. Close the cover.
.,. Switch the heater fan and rear window defrost-
er off.
The battery is vented to the outside to prevent
gases from entering the vehicle interior . Make
sure that the jumper clamps are well connected
with their metal ports in full contact with the
battery te rminals .
