10 Using surround sound (EV51DVD only)
Introduction to surround
sound
There are two basic sound mode options:
Surround and Advanced Surround DSP .

Surround modes

There are several different Surround modes
you can use with a source, but for basic
playback and multi-channel decoding, you
can simply select AUTO.
Use one of the three Pro Logic II modes to
add depth to a 2-channel source.
Auto
The AUTO mode plays back the source
according to the type of signal it has
detected. For example, multichannel sources
are automatically decoded according to the
format, and two-channel sources are played
in stereo. For basic home theater decoding,
simply leave the system on this setting.
Pro Logic
This mode gives 4 channel surround sound.
It is less sensitive to the quality of the source
material, so may be useful when Pro Logic II
Movie/ Music modes do not give good
results.
Pro Logic II Movie
This mode gives 5 channel surround sound.
It is suitable for movies, especially those
recorded in Dolby Surround. The channel
separation and movement of surround
effects is comparable to Dolby Digital 5.1.

Pro Logic II Music
This mode gives 5 channel surround sound
and is suitable for music. Compared to Pro
Logic II Movie, the surround effect is more
enveloping.
Stereo
When you select STEREO, you will hear the
source through just the front left and right
speakers. Dolby Digital and DTS multi-
channel sources are downmixed to stereo.
The audio plays according to the surround
setup settings and you can still use the tone
control (SOUND MODE) functions.

Advanced Surround DSP modes

These are designed to be used with multi
channel surround sound audio/visual
sources (like DVDs and LDs). Most Advanced
Surround modes are designed to be used
with film soundtracks, but some modes are
also suited for music sources. Try different
settings with various soundtracks to see
which you like.
Extra Power
Gives additional energy and depth to a stereo
source by using the surround speakers in
addition to the front speakers (see the
diagram on page 14 for the Extra Power
mode speaker setup).
Music
Simulates the acoustic environment of a
large concert hall and is suitable for music.
