feed my TV a progressive signal, as I have only an Int erlaced DVD player and no HDTV.
Also, the MILD Picture Mode disables Advanced Video.
(12) Just purchased what I believe is the European Version of the 50XBR800
(50SX200) and would like to know if the same tweaks will work? Maybe.
(13) In 4:3 mode the vertical sides of the picture. are slightly bowed inward. I don't
think that's right. I've seen most of the GW's in the showroom showing the same
thing. I did see one however that was perfectly strait. I would assume that you can
fix this in the service menu. Am I right? I have found no geometry adjustments to fix
this. The standard adjustments for XBR CRT screens are in the set, but they do nothing.
(14) Can you explain what the reality and clarity settings do in the advanced picture
menu? I am not sure what they are doing technically, but after watching many test
patterns I believe the settings I recommended give the best results.
(15) I have a 721 Dish Player that has 1 s-video input. I also have Panasonic HS2
video recorder that accepts s-video input and outputs s-video and a progressive
signal through component output. I have tested the 721 signal through s-video
directly to the 60XBR and through the video recorder connected through s-video
and output through component (progressive) and s-video. I have found that the PQ
looks much better through the component output that I am getting out the DVD
recorder. I am trying to sort this out in my head. The 721 outputs 480i signal from
dish ----> the DVD recorder (Panasonic HS2) takes the signal and sends it to the TV
at 480p (I guess?) ---> then the TV scales it to 768. Is this correct? Why I see a
difference in PQ? Does this means that a scaler between the satellite receiver and
the TV can improve the signal? I do not much about these things but I am seeing
quite a difference in pq on regular dish signal and I am trying to sort out why the
difference.? Your analysis of the signal path is correct. I don't think it would be the
scaler since it is active for 480p and 480i. I guess it could be the video mode
deinterlacing if you are seeing fewer artifacts like jagged lines. If it is color, black level
or sharpness related I would guess it has more to do with other circuitry, service menu or
calibration differences.
(16) Can you comment on the vertical sharpness issue ? The AVIA disk mentions that
vertical patterns that are similar to sharpness on the horizontal axis are a result of
deinterlacing and scaling. Do you not see this on the sharpness test pattern on your
machine? Do you know of any SM parameters that would reduce this? The settings I
suggested give full DVD resolution both in the vertical and horizontal axis from my DVD
player. I have not seen any improvement with other settings on the test patterns I was
using. It is be possible in video mode that something else is better. I have not looked
much at that mode since it looks reasonable to me.
(17) Is it true that S-Video bypasses the 3d digital comb filter on the GWII (or any
other set for that matter)? Yes. That and the signal loss with S-Video can be a problem.
S-Video connectors are so small it is hard to use them with quality cable.
