Patch and Tone Notes

Roland used a system in their tone storage that only references a tone and does not actually store the tone with the Patch.
This has some disadvantages in that many of the Roland tones are ROM based and cannot be edited and for the ones that
can if an edit is made this will effect every Patch that references the Tone that is edited.
With the Kiwi-SJX upgrades the Tones are stored as part of the Patch. There is a separate area in memory that can store 512
Library Tones. These can be edited and copied to or from any of the 512 Patches in either the Upper or Lower locations.
Tones can be extracted from a Patch by entering Tone Edit Mode where a Tone can be loaded into or saved from a Patch.
This is done in the JX-10 by holding down the TONE EDIT button for 2 seconds (a long press). In the MKS-70 the TONE
button is used. To exit this mode press the TONE EDIT button or press the CANCEL button. The Cancel button in the MKS-
70 is the Cancel/Master Tune button.
When Tone Edit Mode is entered the currently selected upper or lower tone is copied to the Library Tone edit buffer. From
here is can be edited or saved to the Library memory or copied back to the tone in either the upper or lower memory. To
copy a library tone into the currently loaded Patch while in Tone Edit Mode a long press on the Upper or Lower buttons will
copy the library tone into the Patch.
The Tone Edit Buffer can be overwritten by loading in a new tone from the library using the G(1-8),B(1-8) and T(1-8) buttons.
The 0&9 Tone buttons are not used.
When in Library Tone Edit Mode only the tone selected will sound at the output of both voice boards.
The Kiwi-SJX Tones are a Library of Tones in a separate memory area that can be selected to be part of a Patch and are not
used in normal play.
Patch & Tone Import Sysex Support
The KiwiSJX upgrade supports loading Roland format sysex dumps. To fully load in a Roland MKS-70/JX-10 Patch & Tone
dump this must be sent to the KiwiSJX twice. The reason for this is the Roland format has the Patch data before the Tone
data. This works for the Roland JX-10/MKS-70 as the Patch only references the Tones and doesn't actually store them in the
Patch. Because the KiwiSJX stores the Tone data with the Patch the Tones need to be already in the memory and only on the
second load will the correct Tones be already in memory for the Patch write to work correctly.
When Roland JX-8P tones are imported a Patch is created with the JX-8P tone in both the Lower & Upper memory locations
and the voice mode is set to Dual. As both voice boards are independently playing the same tone the result is a fuller sound
than the JX-8P can produce.
The Oberheim M1000 and other tone formats are supported as much as is possible. Many of the parameters are different
and where possible these have been converted. The result will be interesting but not always the same sound.
With all patch and Tone imports, tones that use the ENV LEVEL parameter to tune the DCOs will most likely need adjusting.
It has not proved possible to get this exact for the various synth imports while importing and some tones will sound out of
tune initially until edited.
