Chapter 1: Overview of implementation

Planning how your virtual private network should be configured is critical to the successful
deployment of a secure virtual private network.This chapter provides an overview of the major
features that you will configure.

establishing firewall policies, and VPNs before implementing a VPN using
VPNmanager.

Components of the Avaya security solution

The Avaya security solution consists of the following:
Avaya VPNmanager™
Avaya™ SG security gateways and VPN Service Units (VSU)

Beginning with VPNmanager 3.4, this configuration guide uses "security

gateway" to refer to both the security gateway and the VSU. The VPNmanager
application uses the word "Device" to refer to both of these components.
Avaya VPNremote™ Client

Security gateways

The security gateways are designed to provide firewall coverage and VPN gateway functionality
for enterprises migrating towards converged network environments. The security gateway
performs cryptography, authentication, and filtering tasks at the boundary of the VPN.
After the security gateway is installed and configured, the security gateway is transparent to
users who are logged into the VPN.
