the
variety

angles caused by
the up and down

rear
axle

constantly
varying

movement of the
rear
axle
due
to
road spnng

spider

Slacken the end
clamps
of the
centre
tube and
pre
oIencer
and
move to
the
left
Chock
the
front
wheels
Jack
up
the
rear
of the
car
and
support
on
fIrmly
based
stands
Remove the
left
hand
rear
wheel
Undo
and
remove
the handbrake
rear
cable
adjusting
nut from the
adjuster
and dIsconnect
the left hand
cable from the
handbrake adluster
ThiS
WIll gIVe
suffICIent
100m
to
remove
the
propeller shaft

or
fole
mark
the
propeller shaft couplong
flanges
at
the
rear so
that
they
may
be
refItted
In
the
Original
poSition

Two
piece
propeller
shaft
Support
the
weight
of
the
propeller shaft
at the
centre
undo
and
remove
the
two bolts and
washers
that
secure
the
centre
beanng support bracket
to
the
crossmember

Undo
and
remove
the
four
nuts
bolts and washers that
secure
the
rear
couplong flanges
5
Place
a container
under
the
rear
of
the
gearbox
to
catch
oil
that
woll
l S ue
from
the
end
Carefully
lower
the
rear
of
the
propeller
shaft
draw
rearwards
to
detach
the
sploned end
from
the
gearbox
and loft away from the
underside
of the
car

RefIttIng the
propeller thaft
IS
the
reverse
sequence
to
removal
but the
follOWing
additional points should
be noted

the
propeller
shaft
and
dIfferential

Mark
all
parts
to ensure
that

Clean away alt
traces
of dirt and grease from the
area
around
the
unrversal
Jomt

Remove
the four snap rings from the ournal
assemblv
usmg
a
screwdriver

Hold
the
propeller
shaft
and
uSing
a
soft faced hammer
tap
the
Universal
JOint
yoke
so
as
to remove
the
bearing
cups
by
shock
action

Remove
all four
bearing
cups
In
the
manner
deSCribed and
then free the
propeller
shaft from the
spider
7
Thoroughly clean
out
the
yokes
and
journals
8
Check
to
see
If the
journal
diameter has
worn
In
excess
of
00059

It
has

new
shaft

Check
the
spIder
sea
rings for
damage which

they
should
be
renewed

Inspect
the sleeve
yoke spline
to
gearbox
main
shaft
splines
for
wear
If the
backlash
exceeds 0 0197

be
renewed

If VIbratIons from the
propeller
shaft have been
experienced
check
the
run
out at the
centre
by rotating
on
V
shaped
blocks
and
a
dial mdlcator gauge
at
the
centre
The
run
out
must not

reassemble
fit
new
all seals and
retainers on
the
spider
Journals
place
the
spIder
on
the
propeller
shaft
yoke
and
assemble the
needle
rollers
Into
the
bearmg
cups retaining them

some
thIck grease

the

WIth grease
taking
care
that all

bubbles

the
centre
bearing by rotating the
race

feels
rough

dIscarded

the

track

Before
fItting
a rear
bearing assembly check
that
It
compares
exactly
With the old
one
removed It
IS
not
necessary
to
lubricate
the bearing
as
It
IS
aled dUring manufacture

Reassembly
and
refitting
IS
the
reverse
sequence
to
removal
but
the follOWing addItIonal
points should be noted
