automatic transmiSSion
IS
fitted and
provides
a
full
automatic
transmiSSion
with
a
range of 6 gear
poSitions
The
gear
sets
are
of
the
Sympson planetary
type and
are
controlled
by
two
multi
plate
clutches
a
brake band
and
a
multi disc brake
It will
automatically adjUst dUring
torque
to
load and
speed
by
the selection of the
correct
ratio
depending
on
the
driVing
conditions
The
Unit
Includes
a
three
element
hydrokinetic
torque
converter
coupling
capable
of
torque
multiplication
at an
mflnltely
vanable
ratio
between 2
1 and 1

Due to the
complexity
of the
automatic transmiSSion
Unit If
performance

to
standard
or
overhaul

It

only
a
recommended
grade
of
automatic
transmiSSion
flUid

used when
toppmg
up
or
changing

With the
car
standing
on
level
ground
open the bonnet and
clean around the top of the 011 hller tube
and dIpstIck
2
Move
the selector lever
to
the P
Park
pOSItIon
and
firmly
apply
the handbrake
3
Start the engme and allow
to run at a
fast Idle
speed
until the
engine
and
transmiSSion
umt
reach
their
normal
operating
temperature
4
With
the engine running
at
normal Idle
speed
Withdraw the
dipstick
Wipe
qUickly
return
and
Withdraw agam
5
If necessary add suffiCient flUid
to
the
transmiSSion Unit
via
the filler
tube
to
bring
the
level
to
the
full mark
on
the
dipstick
Do
not
overfill the
Unit

Any suspected
faults must be
referred
to the local Datsun
garage before
Unit
removal
as
with thiS
type
of
transmiSSion Its
fault
must
be confirmed
uSing
special equipment
before
It

removed from the
car

As the
automatic transmission
IS
relatively heavy
It IS
best If
the
car
IS
raised from the
ground
on
ramps but
It IS
pOSSible
to
remove
the
Unit
If the
car IS
placed
on
high axle
stands Tvvo
people
will be
required dUring
the later
stages
of
removal

Disconnect the
battery poSitIVe
and
negative terminals

Refer
to
Chapter
10 and
remove
the
starter motor

Place
a
large
container under the dram
plug
remove
the dram
plug
and allow
all
the flUId
to
dram
out
Refit
the
dram
plug
If
the
car
has
recently
been driven
take
care
because the flUId WIll
be very hot and
can
easily
burn

sconnect
the filler tube and the
dIpstIck
from the trans
miSSion
casing and
remove

When
an
011 cooler
IS
fItted dIsconnect the pIpes and
plug
the
Unions to
stop
dirt Ingress

Detach the
transmiSSion
klckdown
control
cable from the
throttle
Imkage
9
Detach
the
speed
selector
equahser
and lever
assembly from
the Side of the
maIO
casing
10 Refer
to
Chapter
7 and dIsconnect the
propeller
shaft
11
Disconnect the
speedometer
cable from the dnven gear
on
the Side of the
transmiSSion Unit
Then
remove
the dnven gear
and
plug
the hole
to
prevent
dIrt mgress
12 Refer
to
Chapter 9
and dIsconnect the
handbrake secondary
cable from the lower end of the
relay
lever
13 The exhaust
downplpe
should
now
be
dIsconnected
from the
exhaust
manifold
14 Make
a note
of the electrical
connectIons at
the start
safety
SWitch
on
the
Side
of the
transmiSSion
unit
Disconnect the
cables
15 Place
a
pIece of soft wood
on
the saddle of
a
garage
hydrauhc
Jack
and
support
the
weIght
of the
rear
of the engine

Undo
and
remove
the bolts and
washers that
secure
the
transmiSSion
mounttng support
to
the
underside of the
body
17 Undo and
remove
the bolts that
secure
the
mountmg
to
the
rear
extension
hOUSing
and hft away the
mounting assembly
18 Worlong through
the
starter motor
aperture
undo and
remove
the bolts that
secure
the torque
converter to
the engme
adaptor
plate

19 Undo and
remove
the
top
transmiSSion to
engine securing
bolts
20 Usmg
a
second
Jack
preferably
of the
trolly type support
the
weight
of the
transmiSSion unit

Undo and
remove
the remalnmg bolts that
secure
the
trans
miSSion to
the engme

W th
the
help
of
a
second
person
carefully
WIthdraw the
assembly
rearwards
so
as to
clear the
converter
from the
adaptor
plate

Whilst thIS
IS
bemg
done
take
great
care SO
that the
torque
converter
does
not
become
separated
from the front of
the
transmiSSion UOIt
24 The
Unit
may
now
be lifted away from the
undersIde
of the
car

Refitting
the
transmiSSion
UOIt
IS
the
reverse
sequence
to
removal The
followmg
addItIOnal
pomts
should be noted

Make
sure
that the converter
IS
fully
engaged

the front of
the
transmiSSion UOlt
and
In
the
spigot
10
the
rear
of the
crankshaft

Make
sure
that
the
matmg
faces of
the
torque
converter
housmg
and
rear
of
the engine crankcase
are
completely
clean
and free from
brUISing

Check
that the
rear
engme
plate
IS
correctly positioned

that
secure
the converter
to
the
adaptor plate

be
tIghtened

The bolt
heads
must
be
on
the engine SIde

adaptor plate

the
