5.4 Replacing Parts under the Light Shield

5.4.4 Replacing the Exhaust Fan

The exhaust fan is mounted on the chassis, not on the optical engine. You can remove it without
removing the optical engine.
The exhaust fan is mounted in a housing on the back
wall of the chassis all the way to the right. The hous-
ing is secured with two nuts.
To remove the exhaust fan
1. Turn off the display and disconnect the power
cord.
2. Remove the light shield. ("Replacing Parts under
the Light Shield" on page 80)
3. Disconnect the exhaust fan plug. Follow the wires
from the exhaust fan down to a plug near the right
wall of the chassis and disconnect it. You will also
have to remove any tape holding this wires, or
remove them from a cable clip.
4. Remove the two nuts (5/16") holding the fan
housing. These nuts are on the extreme outside of
the housing and are against the back wall of the
chassis.
The fan comes off with the housing. This whole
assembly is the replaceable part.
To install the exhaust fan
1. Turn off the display and disconnect the power
cord.
2. Remove the light shield. ("Replacing Parts under
the Light Shield" on page 80)
3. Slip the fan housing over the studs on the back
wall of the chassis.
4. Put the nuts on the studs, finger tight.
5. As you tighten the nuts, lift the fan housing so it
touches the chimney opening above.
6. Connect the fan electrically.
7. Dress the fan wires along the right wall of the
chassis and tape them in place. This prevents the
wires from getting into the light path and casting
a mysterious shadow on the screen.
