The set of keys
1
Each master key with remote control is
powered by a long-life battery that is auto-
matically recharged while the car is being
driven. You should therefore use every
master key at least twice a year to keep the
battery charged. Depending on which mas-
ter key is identified when the car is
unlocked, various settings in the car are
called up and established, see Key Memory
further below.
In addition, information about service
requirements is stored in the master key,
see Condition Based Service CBS,
page 172.
2
Spare key, to be kept in a safe place, for
instance in a purse or wallet.
This key will not operate the locks in the
luggage compartment lid and the glove box.
This is an advantage at hotels, for example.
The key is not intended for regular use.
New keys
New keys, whether additional ones or replace-
ments, are available from BMW Service.
Key Memory
How it works
You have probably wished at times that individ-
ual functions of your car could be individually
selected or adjusted to suit your own personal
preferences. When developing the car, BMW

therefore incorporated a number of freely pro-
grammable options into the car's design; you
can adjust these as preferred via iDrive.
With the Key Memory, you can program up to
four sets of basic settings for the use of four
different persons. This presupposes that each
person has his or her own master key with
remote control.
The car identifies the key by means of data
exchange when the car is unlocked, and
performs the necessary adjustments.
