THERMOSTAT
A thermostat, located near the manifold at the front of tlie
engine, controls the coolant temperature as the coolant
continuously flows through the closed cooling circuit When
the engine is first started, the closed thermostat prevents
coolant from flowing (some coolant is by-passed 1j:rrough a
hole in Ihe Ihermostat to prevent 1he exhaust manifold from
overheating). As Ihe engine wanns up, Ihe Ihermostat
gradually opens. The Ihermostat is accessible and can be
checked, cleaned, or replaced easily. Cany a spare Ihermostat
and gasket
Replacing the Thermostat
Remove the cap screws and disassemble the thermosta1
housing as shown. When installing the new thermosta1 and
gasket, apply a thin coat of sealant on both sides of the
gasket before pressing it into place. DO' not over-tighten 1he
cap screws.
Run the engine and check for nornrnl ternperatores and that
there are no leaks at the thermostat housing.

A clean raw water intake strainer is a vital component of Ihe
engine's cooling system. Include a visual inspection of this
strainer when making your periodic engine check. The water
in Ihe glass should be clear.
Perform the fOllowingmamtenance after every 100 hours of
operation:

If
the engine temperature gauge ever shows a bigher than

that
silt, leaves or grass
may have been caught up in the strainer, slowing the flow of
raw water through the cooling system.
