The virtual MIDI node (port) for the instru-

ment plug-in should be automatically selected
for the Instrument track's MIDI Output. If not,
select the desired MIDI channel and corre-
sponding port for the instrument plug-in.
Assign the track output to the appropriate

path or paths for monitoring.
Adjust the Instrument track fader to mix the
5
audio input.
If you are controlling the Instrument plug-in
6
from the Instrument track, you can also mix us-
ing the MIDI Volume and Pan controls in the In-
strument View.
To use Instrument tracks to monitor and mix audio
from external MIDI instruments:
Connect the audio outputs of your external
1
MIDI instrument (such as a MIDI synthesizer) to
available inputs on your Pro Tools audio inter-
faces.
If necessary, configure the I/O Setup dialog for
2
the input paths you plan to use (see Chapter 7,
"I/O Setup.")
Connect the MIDI input and output of your
3
external MIDI instrument to available MIDI in-
put and output ports on your MIDI interface.
If necessary, configure the MIDI Studio Setup

(Setup > MIDI > MIDI Studio).
Use an existing or create a new Instrument
5
track with the corresponding number of chan-
nels for your audio source (mono, stereo, or
multichannel).
Set the audio input of the Instrument track to
6
the corresponding input path.
In the Instrument track's Instrument View, set
7
the MIDI output to the corresponding MIDI
port connected to the MIDI input of your exter-
nal MIDI instrument.
Assign the track output to the appropriate
8
path or paths for monitoring.

Audio Input selector
Audio Output selector
Instrument track configured to control and monitor an
external MIDI instrument (K2600XS)
Adjust the Instrument track fader to mix the

audio input.
If you are controlling the external MIDI in-

strument from the Instrument track, you can
also mix using the MIDI Volume and Pan con-
trols in the Instrument View.
