Working with Grayscale Graphics

Printed bitmap graphics consist of a series of dots, either black or white (white =
unprinted), with a specific number of dots per inch. Examples of bitmap graphics
include color graphics saved as .BMP files (bitmap) with Windows Paintbrush;
.TIF files (Tagged Image File Format) generated by electronic scanners and
graphics applications; and .DIB files (Device Independent Bitmaps.)
Bitmaps of line drawings and other black-and-white art consist solely of black or
white dots. In contrast, bitmap images store data for each dot as a shade of gray.
The printer prints only black dots. Printing a grayscale image requires converting
its shades of gray to black and white dots that the printer can produce - a process
called halftoning.
With the Windows Printing System, you can choose from three halftoning methods
that depict the number of gray or tonal values in grayscale graphics. Solid Black
and White, Patterned Grays, and Diffuse Grays.
The Brightness and Contrast settings for the document will affect the results of the
halftoning method you select. The halftone settings, however, will not affect
bitmaps which have no grayscale values.
Some applications have their own halftoning settings. If so, use the
application's settings, which will override those you specify with the
NOTE
Windows Printing System.
Solid Black and White
Solid Black and White converts all shades of gray in the graphics to either black or
white. What becomes black or white depends on the Brightness setting – grays
lighter than the current setting for Brightness become white, and those darker
become black.
Solid Black and White prints fast, but shows the fewest details. This method works
well if your document contains only text and simple graphics, or if you want a
proof copy of a document containing complex graphics.
Selecting the Solid Black and White halftoning method dims the

Contrast control.
