  • Page 65 xStack® DGS-3120 Series Managed Switch Web UI Reference Guide The main characteristics of IEEE 802.1Q are as follows: • Assigns packets to VLANs by filtering. • Assumes the presence of a single global spanning tree. • Uses an explicit tagging scheme with one-level tagging.
  • Page 66 xStack® DGS-3120 Series Managed Switch Web UI Reference Guide Figure 4–3 Adding an IEEE 802.1Q Tag Port VLAN ID Packets that are tagged (are carrying the 802.1Q VID information) can be transmitted from one 802.1Q compliant network device to another with the VLAN information intact. This allows 802.1Q VLANs to span network devices (and indeed, the entire network, if all network devices are 802.1Q compliant).
  • Page 67 xStack® DGS-3120 Series Managed Switch Web UI Reference Guide If a packet has previously been tagged, the port will not alter the packet, thus keeping the VLAN information intact. xStack® DGS-3120 Series Managed Switch Web UI Reference Guide Port Transition States An essential difference between the three protocols is in the way ports transition to a forwarding state and in the way this transition relates to the role of the port (forwarding or not forwarding) in the topology. MSTP and RSTP combine the transition states disabled, blocking and listening used in 802.1D-1998 and creates a single state Discarding.
