LESSON 18
Exporting and Importing Structured Files
Once you have authored a valid Structured FrameMaker 7.0 file, you have the flexibility
to output it in many ways. In the previous two lessons, you learned what a structured
document looks like and built CIBColorDoc1.fm into one. Then you saved it as
CIBColorFinal.fm for use in this lesson. The key factor to keep in mind is that the files
you'll make here will look reasonably similar to the original FrameMaker file but will not
be identical. Achieving a perfectly articulated file which is identical in distributed
multiple formats such as XML, HTML, SGML, XHTML, and PDF is a subject for
advanced study and experience beyond this Classroom in a Book.
In this lesson you'll:
• Export a valid structured document to PDF and to XML.
• In a browser, view the XML document after it is transformed into an HTML file.
• View the PDF document in Adobe Acrobat.
• Complete a round trip by importing the XML file back into Structured FrameMaker 7.0.
• Learn about WebWorks Publisher for creating and manipulating XML, HTML or other
structured files.
Exporting to XML
You'll be opening the document you created in Lesson17, CIBColorFinal.fm, and reusing
it. Then you will explore the way in which different applications reflect the files'
structured data.
1 Go to the L18XML folder within the Lesson18 folder and open the structapps.fm file.
2 Choose File > Structure Tools > Read Application Definitions.
3 In the dialog box, click OK.
4 Choose File > Set Structured Applications.
5 In the Set Structured Application box, select TechPubs from the pop-up menu.
6 Click Set.
7 Go to the L18XML folder within the Lesson18 folder and open CIBColorFinal.fm.
8 Choose File > Set Structured Application.
9 In the Set Structured Application box, select TechPubs from the pop-up menu and
click Set.
