For this lesson, you will save files as .fm, which will save them as standard FrameMaker 7.0 formatted files. To save the file, choose File > Save As, enter the filename Sample1.fm, and click Save.

Each format consists of many properties—such as line and paragraph spacing, indents, alignment, tab stops, and font properties—and each format has a name, or tag.

It’s usually easier to work with text when text symbols and borders are visible, so you’ll display them again. 1 Choose View > Text Symbols and then View > Borders.

To make your work easier, you’ll now change the ruler units to picas—the appropriate setting for a document that uses points as display units (each pica contains 12 points).

Formatting first-level headings The first-level headings in the document are all tagged Heading1. You’ll modify their paragraph format next. 1 Click anywhere in the heading Planning and evaluation.

  • Page 77 • Create custom master pages Changing column layout To learn how page design works in FrameMaker 7.0, you’ll set up the page layout for the chapters of a small book. The sample document already contains the paragraph and character formats that you’ll use for document text.
  • Page 78 Every FrameMaker 7.0 document has at least one master page. Layout1.fm has two master pages because it’s a double-sided document. One master page is used for all the left pages, and another is used for all the right pages.

When text fills a body page, FrameMaker 7.0 adds a page automatically, copies the template text frame to the body page from the appropriate master page, and continues the text on the new page.
