Vertical Sump Pump 3.4 STORING Storing any pump for any length of time presents a few challenges. Dirt, sand and moisture can wreak havoc on parts with close clearances, such as running clearances between impellers and cases and between bearings and shafting. Dirt and sand working their way through these areas can result in wear and opening up of wear ring clearances to an extent that the efficiency of the pump may be affected shortly after start up.
Page 17
Return the unit to the shipping crate. When the pump is to be installed, remove all the protective coatings and desiccant or drain all oils. One month before installation, a Ruhrpumpen representative should be employed to conduct a final inspection. V2.012819...
Vertical Sump Pump 3.4.3 Motor (Driver) Storage To properly store the motor (driver) for periods longer than one month, follow these steps: Store the motor in a clean, dry area, or cover it with a loose tarp (the tarp must be loose in order to prevent condensation).
Vertical Sump Pump o A third option is to use an auxiliary heat source and keep the windings warm by either convection or blowing warm dry air into the motor. Be careful not to overheat, since keeping the temperature of the motor frame 9 °F (5 °C) above the surrounding ambient temperature is sufficient.

NOTE: The information in this section is intended as a general guideline. For further information refer to the corresponding section in API Recommended Practices 686. IMPORTANT: The design of foundations is not the responsibility of Ruhrpumpen. It is therefore recommended that the customer consult a competent specialist skilled in the field of foundations, to insure proper design/installation of the foundation.
Vertical Sump Pump Grouting prevents lateral displacement of the pump’s discharge, but it does not fix irregularities in the foundation. 4.2.1 Equipment/Material Required • Grout Mix: Non shrink type. • Sufficient lumber for foundation template and grout trough • Risers or funnels for guiding grout. •...
Page 23
Vertical Sump Pump Apply three coats of paste wax to the inside surfaces of the forms in order to prevent adherence. Do not use oil or liquid wax. Prevent grout leakage, as leaks will not self-seal. Apply the grout. The use of push tools to get rid of trapped air is allowed if done in long strokes.
Vertical Sump Pump Tighten the foundation bolts with an appropriate torque value. In case of doubt, please contact your Ruhrpumpen representative. Apply oil paint to exposed grout to protect from air and moisture. Use a lifting rig to position the pump and driver on their baseplate so that the mounting feet line up with their respective tapped holes.
Vertical Sump Pump Lift the pump off the wooden support skid. After lifting the pump with the two cranes to an appropriate height, the crane whose rope or sling is attached near the pump´s case must be slowly lowered while the crane whose ropes or slings are attached to the lifting lugs on the plate is slowly raised in order to tilt the pump towards a vertical stance like the figure shown below: Figure 4.2 Tilting the pump towards a vertical stance using the two crane method.
Vertical Sump Pump Figure 4.3 Attaching rope or sling to the pump to lift it using the one crane method. With the pump still in the wooden support skid, begin raising the top end of the pump with the crane, using the wooden support skid as a pivot, to tilt the pump into a vertical stance, as shown below: Figure 4.4 Tilting the pump into a vertical stance using the one crane method.
Vertical Sump Pump 4.5.1 Pump Installation Procedure The float and rod must be assembled and partially adjusted before installing the pump. Insert the float rod through the guide on the support plate and slide a locking collar on the bottom of the rod, then the float and then another locking collar. Slide a locking collar onto the top end of the rod and push the rod through the float switch arm.
Page 28
Vertical Sump Pump for the line voltage used. Wrong wiring may cause motor burn-out. Be sure starter or float switch overload protection device is proper for the voltage used and the motor horsepower. Start motor, and test for proper rotation. The shaft should rotate clockwise when looking down on the motor.
Vertical Sump Pump 5. PIPING AND ALIGNMENT These units are furnished for a specific service condition. Any change in the hydraulic system may affect the pump performance adversely. The connection of the piping must be carried out with utmost care; otherwise, the pumping medium can escape during operation, which can seriously endanger the operating personnel.
API Recommended Practices 686. IMPORTANT: The design of piping and related systems is not the responsibility of Ruhrpumpen. It is, therefore, recommended that the customer consult a competent specialist skilled in the field of piping to insure proper design/installation of all the piping.
Page 31
Vertical Sump Pump When heating takes place close to the flange, there is a danger that the flange seal will become rippled and leaky. No more welding work can be carried out on the piping when it is screwed to the pump. Proceed in the same way with the discharge pipe.
Vertical Sump Pump 5.2 MOUNTING AND ALIGNING DRIVER Check the mounting flange dimensions and the shaft extension to make sure that they will fit the nozzle head and driver half coupling that is being furnished. Support driver vertically. Thoroughly clean the driver shaft and both driver and nozzle head mounting flange faces.
Page 33
Vertical Sump Pump Rotate the adjusting nut until the distance between the top of the pump's shaft and the top flange of the driver's support has decreased by a range of 0.010 to 0.015 inches (0.25 to 0.38 mm). Tighten the adjusting nut's set screws to fix the shaft in position. Attach the Total Indicator Readout (TIR) tool 1 inch (25 mm) above the mechanical seal, being careful not to force the pump shaft radially, and turn the pump shaft.
Customer must fill bearing frame before startup. This should be done using the constant level oiler. Please refer to the steps indicated in the Oil Change subsection. Ruhrpumpen takes every precaution during our assembly process and subsequent final assembly audits to ensure no bearing frame oil leaks exist prior to shipment.
Page 35
Vertical Sump Pump Oil Change Once every eight hours of pump operation, perform visual inspection of oil and oil level at the constant level oiler. The first oil change should be carried out three weeks after commissioning; all further oil changes take place every six months.

Vertical Sump Pump 6.1.3 Pure Oil Mist – Dry Sump When pure oil lubrication is supplied, the oil mist is the only lubricant provided. The oil mist generator must be running before starting the unit. Basic oil-mist generating system should include the following: An airline filter water separator to assure a clean air supply to oil-mist generator.
Vertical Sump Pump 6.1.4 Purge Oil Mist – Wet Sump When purge oil lubrication is supplied, the oil mist is used to maintain a positive pressure in the bearing housing to keep contaminants from entering the bearing housing. Basic Oil Mist generation system should include the following: An airline filter –...
Vertical Sump Pump 6.2.2 External Fluid Lubrication A pipeline is connected to the pump’s flush line and clean fluid is pumped thru it, lubricating the shaft bushings with clean, external liquid. 6.2.3 Grease Lubrication Grease lubricated shaft bushing require grease to be injected into them for proper lubrication. A pneumatic greaser must be employed to supply the grease.
Vertical Sump Pump 7. OPERATION For electric motor drives connect power supply to conform with national and local codes. Line voltage and wire capacity must match the rating stamped on the motor nameplate. Before starting the pump, check the required direction of rotation of the pump. The proper direction is indicated by direction arrow on the pump casing.
Page 42
Vertical Sump Pump WARNING: Operating the pump with a closed discharge valve can result in excessive heat build-up and should be limited to the shortest practical duration. Operating the pump close to shut-off head usually places greater bending strains on the shaft than at operating points near the best efficiency point.
To monitor flow, pressure, temperature, and lubrication, regular visual inspection and monitoring is advisable and/or necessary during operation. Ruhrpumpen recommends checking the pump constantly at regular intervals in order to detect problems early, in case they arise. The operational check routine must include at least the following points: ...
Vertical Sump Pump • Check the oil level and validate that the correct oil grade is used (in oil lubricated pumps). • Check the temperature on the surface of the bearing housing. It should not exceed 185 °F (85 °C). •...
Vertical Sump Pump If the rotor is jerky or suddenly stops, there is danger that the rotor has become blocked. The pump must be opened and all running clearances checked. Ensure the drive motor cannot be unintentionally turned on. Drain the pump and the auxiliary piping only when the pump is taken out for maintenance.
IMPORTANT: For any component/accessory that has not been manufactured by Ruhrpumpen and is part of the pump’s equipment, a complete reading of said component/accessory manufacturer’s manual must be carried out for further information on proper maintenance procedures and relevant safety warnings.
