VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP FOREWORD Propeller and mixed flow pumps are vertical pumping units identified by Ruhrpumpen as VPO. It is recommended that the services of a Ruhrpumpen installation technician be employed for the installation and initial starting of the pump. Such service will help to ensure the user that the equipment is properly installed, and will provide an excellent opportunity for the plant operator to receive useful tips and guidelines relative to the unit.

VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 1. GENERAL 1.1 BOWL ASSEMBLY The standard bowl assembly consists of a 12% Chrome stainless steel pump shaft, cast iron bowl and suction bell, bronze impeller, bronze bearings, thrust collar and impeller key. The suction bell is flared and has seven guide vanes to prevent prerotation and inhibit the formation of vortexes in the sump.
If the staff does not have the necessary knowledge, they must be trained and instructed. Training may be performed by a Ruhrpumpen representative on behalf of the plant operator. Moreover, the plant operator is to make sure that the contents of the operating manual are fully understood by the personnel.
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 2.4 SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS RELEVANT FOR OPERATION • If hot or cold machine components involve hazards, they must be guarded against accidental contact (attach warning signs). • Guards for moving parts must not be removed from the machine while in operation.
Modifications may be made to the machine only after consultation with a Ruhrpumpen representative. Using spare parts and accessories authorized by Ruhrpumpen is in the interest of safety. The use of parts not authorized by the dealer exempt the manufacturer from any liability, voiding the warranty.
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 3. INSTALLATION 3.1 UNITS LESS THAN 30 FEET LONG Pump units not more than 30 feet long are shipped assembled, less driver and top head shaft section. Be sure to inspect the shipment to see that no damage has occurred during transport. A claim should be entered against the carrier if inspection reveals any mishandling.

VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP The actual amount will vary according to tube size and length. Use an ample amount of Permatex or While Lead under this nut to prevent leakage. When a bronze lock ring is furnished it should now be installed, using one ring of packing. Two tapped holes are provided in the tube tension nut to connect the oil line.

VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 4. IMPELLER POSITION ADJUSTMENT 4.1 PROPELLER PUMPS Tighten the adjusting nut until the shaft is lifted to its highest position. Now reverse the nut until the shaft is midway between the high and low positions. Lock the nut as near to this position as practical. 4.2 MIXED FLOW PUMP Be sure the impeller is seated in the bowl.
Page 15
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 5. LUBRICATION 5.1 OPEN LUBRICATION The product will provide adequate lubrication for the rubber bearing/stainless steel shaft combination. The suction bell bearing, however, is grease packed and should be repacked periodically, see below. DO NOT RUN PUMP DRY AS RUBBER BEARINGS WILL SEIZE. Be sure packing is not too tight at start-up.
Page 16
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 5.2.2 Grease Lubrication The suction bell bearing is connected with a grease line and Alemite fitting at the baseplate. Grease should be added periodically in order to lengthen the life of the bearing especially if a bad sand or silt condition exists.
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 6. DISCHARGE LINE The discharge line should be supported in a way that will not put a bind on the pump assembly. A flexible pipe coupling is recommended. If a discharge flap valve is used, an adequate vent should be installed immediately preceding it.
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 7. HYDRAULIC OPERATION Pump should always be submerged enough to prevent extreme vortexes from forming which might allow air to enter the suction. Bottom and side wall clearance should be about 1/2 the suction bell diameter. A clogged strainer or anything choking the suction bell entrance may cause motor overload or cavitation with possible damage resulting.
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 8. DRIVE BELTS Belt drives through 40 HP and 1 160 RPM are grease lubricated. The top ball bearing is of the sealed type provided with lubrication for the life of the bearing, requiring no attention. A shielded type bearing is used at the lower end and a provision made, for adding grease.

Allow grout to set a total of 72 hours before starting pump. WARNING!!! This pump may be supplied by Ruhrpumpen with a gear and flexible shaft for connecting gear to a driver furnished by others. A suitable protective guard should be installed around the flexible shaft to protect personnel from the rotating parts.
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 10. OPERATION 10.1 PRE-STARTING a) Before starting the pump, check that: b) The discharge valve is partially open and the discharge piping is properly connected. c) The impellers have been properly adjusted during installation and the motor shaft and pump rotate freely.
11.1 PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE 11.1.1 Inspection The Ruhrpumpen pumps are designed for long trouble-free service with a minimum amount of attention. Periodically inspect the stuffing box for proper leakage and the pumps for loose bolts, excessive vibration, dirt and corrosion.
Page 23
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 11.2 CORRECTIVE MAINTENANCE – TROUBLE SHOOTING 11.2.1 Pump Does Not Start Failure of the pump to start may be caused by: a) Low voltage supplied to the pump motor. b) Electrical circuit open or not completed. c) Defective motor.
Page 24
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP f) Insufficient NPSH. g) Wrong impeller selection. 11.2.4 Pump Loses Prime After Starting The pump may lose its prime after starting if the liquid level falls below the pump suction. This may occur when the quantity of liquid supplied for pumping is less than the capacity of the pump. 11.2.5 Pump Overloads Motor The pump may overload the motor because: a) Operation at point on curve other than design.
Page 25
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 11.2.6 Pump Vibrates Pump vibration may be caused by: a) Worn bearings. b) Misaligned or bent lineshaft. c) Loose mounting bolts or foundation not rigid. d) Impeller corroded or partially clogged causing unbalance. e) Air or vapor entering suction head. f) Stress due to piping misalignment.
Page 26
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 11.3.2 Pumps Repair of pumps consists of removal of the pump and disassembly to the point necessary for replacement of detective parts. Hoisting equipment such as that described for installation, is required to pull the pump from casing. Remove and disassemble the pump as follows: a) Remove electrical power from motor and disconnect and tag electrical leads at the motor.

VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP 12. STORAGE Storing any pump for any length of time presents a few challenges. Dirt, sand and moisture can play havoc on parts with close clearances, such as running clearances between impellers and cases and between bearings and shafting. Dirt and sand working their way through these areas can result in wear and the opening up of wear ring clearances to an extent that the efficiency of the pump may be affected shortly after startup.
Page 29
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP Prevent foreign materials or dirt from entering the working parts of the pump or driver. Note that the driver’s lifting points are designed to lift only the driver. DO NOT USE these lifting points to lift the pump and driver assembly. Inspect the pump for shipping damage.
Page 30
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP The equipment, when opened for installation, may show evidence of loose, fluctuant rust. The presence of minor amounts of loose rust shall not be a cause for rejection and no re- cleaning is necessary. These films of rust are acceptable on non-critical, corrosion resistant material surfaces, provided there is no visible wall thickness deterioration, nor evidence of corrosion pitting.
Page 31
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP Bearings 1. Grease lubricated cavities must be completely filled with lubricant during the storage period. Remove the drain plug and fill the cavity with grease until grease begins to purge from the drain opening. Refer to the lubrication section of the driver manufacturer’s manual and/or check the motor’s lubrication nameplate for the correct lubricant.
Page 32
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP All motors must have the shaft rotated once a month to ensure the maintenance of a coating lubricant film on the bearing races and journals. Insulation history: The only accurate way to evaluate the condition of the winding insulation is to maintain a history of the insulation readings.
Page 33
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP Figure 12.1 Insulation resistance temperature coefficient graph. Insulation resistance readings must not drop below the value indicated by the following formula: Rm = Kv + 1 Where: Rm: Minimum insulation (in megohms) at 40°C. Kv: Rated motor voltage in kilovolts. Dielectric absorption ratio: In addition to the individual test reading, a dielectric absorption ratio may be required.
Page 34
VERTICAL MIXED FLOW PUMP The ratio is obtained by dividing the second reading by the first reading and is based on a good insulation system increasing its resistance when subjected to a test voltage for a period of time. The ratios are as follows: 10 Minute : 1 Minute 60 Second : 30 Second Dangerous = Less the 1.0...
