These units are vertical process pumps of the overhung power frame configuration and identified by Ruhrpumpen as VSP Chem. VSP Chem pumps are designed to operate in chemical services and can be divided into VSP Chem, VSP Chem (PS) and VSP Chem (L), based on their hydraulics.
Ruhrpumpen recommends consulting also API Recommended Practice 686 to ensure proper installation in your facility. Please contact a Ruhrpumpen representative should problems arise. The pump may only be opened by a Ruhrpumpen approved technician during the guarantee period.
The VSP Chem is a vertically suspended, single casing, volute, lineshaft driven sump pump. For these pumps, rotation is clockwise as viewed from the driver (coupling) end.
Sump pumps for pulpy solids and paper stock applications (VSP Chem (PS)) are furnished with a semi- open impeller design to handle all kinds of stock up to 6% consistency. VSP Chem (PS) pumps are furnished with wear plates on the casing.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 2. SAFETY This operation manual gives basic instructions that should be observed during installation, operation and maintenance of the pump. It is therefore imperative that this manual be read by the responsible personnel/operator prior to assembly and commissioning. It must always be kept available at the installation site.
If the staff does not have the necessary knowledge, they must be trained and instructed. Training may be performed by a Ruhrpumpen representative on behalf of the plant operator. Moreover, the plant operator is to make sure that the contents of the operating manual are fully understood by the personnel.

Pumps and pump units that convey hazardous materials must be decontaminated before any maintenance work is performed.
Modifications may be made to the machine only after consultation with a Ruhrpumpen representative. Using spare parts and accessories authorized by Ruhrpumpen is in the interest of safety. The use of parts not authorized by the dealer exempt the manufacturer from any liability, voiding the warranty.

Comply with the operating data indicated in the data sheet. Never use the pump for handling fluids it is not designed for.
Handle all equipment carefully. Remove unit only by properly supporting the wooden shipping skid. After unloading, inspect the pump, check the shipment against the packing list, and report damages or shortages immediately to freight carrier and to the designated Ruhrpumpen representative. VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 3.3 TRANSPORT WARNING To avoid damage, the unit must be transported and handled with care. It should be gently lowered onto an even surface. Pay attention to and identify the signs marking the points of equilibrium and fastening places for ropes, or the openings for forklift trucks.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 3.4 STORING CAUTION Storing any pump for any length of time presents a few challenges. Dirt, sand and moisture can wreak havoc on parts with close clearances, such as running clearances between impellers and cases and between bearings and shafting. Dirt and sand working their way through these areas can result in wear and opening up of wear ring clearances to an extent that the efficiency of the pump may be affected shortly after start up.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump Keep the pump moisture-free by the following two means: Spray the pump case, bearing frame with acid-free, moisture-free, protective oil or kerosene. WARNING Pumping hot liquids causes the external surface temperature to become equally hot.
Return the unit to the shipping crate. When the pump is to be installed, remove all the protective coatings and desiccant or drain all oils. One month before installation, a Ruhrpumpen representative should be employed to conduct a final inspection. 3.4.3 Motor (Driver) Storage To properly store the motor (driver) for periods longer than one month, follow the manufacturer´s...

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump COMMENT The electric motor and drive assembly is a sub-component of the pump (set) with its own installation, operating, and maintenance guidelines. All details can be found on name-plate affixed to the drive(s). Such devices have their own notified body approval, as indicated on the name-plate where applicable, and Conformity Risk Assessments.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump o A third option is to use an auxiliary heat source and keep the windings warm by either convection or blowing warm dry air into the motor. ATTENTION Be careful not to overheat, since keeping the temperature of the motor frame 9°F (5°C) above the surrounding ambient temperature is sufficient.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump ATTENTION Anticorrosive layers inside the pump housing must be removed with process neutral solvents before commencing pump operation. WARNING When removing the protective coating with a neutral solvent, follow the safety instructions of the solvent manufacturer carefully.
API Recommended Practices 686. IMPORTANT The design of foundations is not the responsibility of Ruhrpumpen. It is therefore recommended that the customer consult a competent specialist skilled in the field of foundations, to insure proper design/installation of the foundation.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump Since the pump unit is mounted directly on a sump cover or flange type mounting plate, it should be located as near as possible to supporting beams or building walls to prevent deflection and vibration.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 4.2.1 Equipment/Material Required • Grout Mix: Non shrink type. • Sufficient lumber for foundation template and grout trough • Risers or funnels for guiding grout. • Sufficient oil paint for grout protective covering. • Dial indicator.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump Provide a form around the baseplate to contain the grout. The form should be chamfered at all corners. ATTENTION Grout forms should be attached with drilled anchors. Do not power nail. ATTENTION Apply three coats of paste wax to the inside surfaces of the forms in order to prevent adherence.
Do not use grout to fill the jackscrew’s holes; use a sealant material instead. Tighten the foundation bolts with an appropriate torque value. In case of doubt, please contact your Ruhrpumpen representative. Apply oil paint to exposed grout to protect from air and moisture.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 4.4.1 Two Crane Method When two lifting cranes are available, a ropes or slings must be attached to each crane and then onto the lifting lugs on the support plate and near the pump´s case, as shown below: Figure 4.1 Attaching ropes or slings to the pump in order to lift it using the two crane method.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 4.5 INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS Standard pumps are completely assembled, carefully adjusted and lubricated at the factory before shipment. WARNING Residues and loose materials must be taken out of the well before installing the pump. 4.5.1 Pump Installation Procedure The float and rod must be assembled and partially adjusted before installing the pump.

Then reset the pump, bolting it to its foundation, and continue to tighten the top lock nut of the discharge pipe up 1 or 2 turns until freedom of rotation is attained.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump DANGER Temperature increases resulting from contact between rotating and stationary components. Explosion hazard! Damage to the pump set! Never check the direction of rotation by starting up the unfilled pump. Before starting the pump, close the gate valve. Start the pump and slowly open the gate valve until desired capacity is obtained.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 5. PIPING AND ALIGNMENT WARNING These units are furnished for a specific service condition. Any change in the hydraulic system may affect the pump performance adversely. WARNING The connection of the piping must be carried out with utmost care; otherwise, the pumping medium can escape during operation, which can seriously endanger the operating personnel.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump ATTENTION The check valve should be installed between the gate valve and discharge flange in order to permit its inspection. Disconnect the piping from the pump if you heat one side of the pipe to align the pipe to the pump.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump ATTENTION Make sure that there are isolation block valves at the pump for each type of auxiliary piping. WARNING Do not install unsupported piping on the pump. ATTENTION Make sure electrical connections do not impose any stress on the pump unit.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump ATTENTION It is important to confirm that the pump can be moved out from the soleplate without cutting or welding. WARNING Do not use drifts or cheater bars to force alignment of bolt holes – serious damage to the pump will result.
Use an original motor or a motor of identical design from the same manufacturer. The permissible temperature limits at the motor flange and motor shaft must be higher than the temperatures generated by the pump. (Contact Ruhrpumpen for temperatures).

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 6. LUBRICATION Correct lubrication is essential to the pump’s proper performance. VSP Chem pump systems require lubrication in two separate areas: the thrust ball bearings and the shaft bushings. 6.1 BEARING LUBRICATION 6.1.1 Grease Lubricated Bearings Grease lubricated pump bearings are prelubricated at the factory before shipment.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump Oil Change Once every eight hours of pump operation, perform visual inspection of oil and oil level at the constant level oiler. The first oil change should be carried out three weeks after commissioning; all further oil changes take place every six months.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump DANGER Inadequate cleaning of debris settled on pump surfaces. Explosion hazard by electrostatic discharge! When cleaning coated pump surfaces in atmospheres of Explosion group IIC, use suitable anti-static equipment. Locate the constant level oiler assembly and identify its three main components: the oil tank, the adjustable oil tank collar and the oil tank reservoir.

Untighten set screws and adjust the adjustable oil tank collar to the desired fluid level. The bottom of the collar indicates the fluid level.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 6.2 SHAFT BUSHING LUBRICATION VSP Chem pumps have three different lubrication configurations for the shaft bushings, which are self-lubrication, external lubrication (with a clean lubricant) and grease lubrication. 6.2.1 Grease Lubrication The most common configuration, the grease line begins at the top of the mounting plate and ends on the shaft bearings.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump 7. OPERATION DANGER For electric motor drives connect power supply to conform with national and local codes. Line voltage and wire capacity must match the rating stamped on the motor nameplate. CAUTION Before starting the pump, check the required direction of rotation of the pump. The proper direction is indicated by direction arrow on the pump casing.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump CAUTION Increased wear due to dry running. Damage to the pump set! Never operate the pump set without liquid fill. Never close the shut-off element in the suction line and/or supply line during pump operation.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump Position of discharge valve on starting A high or medium head centrifugal pump operated at full speed with the discharge gate valve closed will require much less energy than when it is operated at its rated head and flow with the gate valve open.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump MACHINE PROTECTION Formation of a potentially explosive atmosphere inside the pump. Explosion hazard! When draining tanks take suitable measures to prevent dry running of the pump (e.g. fill level monitoring). WARNING Exposed coupling and shafting between pump and driver must be protected with coupling guard and/or shaft guard prior to pump start-up and operation.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump ATTENTION Only if your pump will operate submerged in a sump or well, the discharge valve may be left opened since installation and during the startup procedure. 7.2 OPERATING CHECK During the initial operating hours, the pump should be monitored constantly. It is thus possible to detect irregularities immediately and to take appropriate measures for their elimination (see SECTION ELEVEN - TROUBLESHOOTING CHART).

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump Ruhrpumpen recommends checking the pump constantly at regular intervals in order to detect problems early, in case they arise. The operational check routine must include at least the following points: WARNING Beware of freely rotating parts, when the pump is in operation there is a high risk of injury.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump WARNING If the sealing system of the mechanical seal fails, the pump must be taken out of operation immediately. WARNING The pump may only be operated under the minimum operating range for short periods. The minimum pump flow is given in the characteristic line.
VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump WARNING Unintentional starting of the pump set. Risk of injury by moving components and shock currents! Ensure that the pump set cannot be started unintentionally. Always make sure the electrical connections are disconnected before carrying out work on the pump set.

Drain the pump and the cooling/heating chambers (if any) or otherwise protect them against freezing. CAUTION Risk of potentially explosive atmosphere by mixing of incompatible fluids in the auxiliary piping.

Explosion hazard! Damage to the pump set! Service the pump set regularly with qualified personnel in accordance with the maintenance instructions.
Vertical Sump Pump IMPORTANT For any component/accessory that has not been manufactured by Ruhrpumpen and is part of the pump’s equipment, a complete reading of said component/accessory manufacturer’s manual must be carried out for further information on proper maintenance procedures and relevant safety warnings.

VSP CHEM Vertical Sump Pump Remove the motor support from the pump. If your pump is equipped with steam jackets, skip to Section 8.1.1 – Steam Jacket Piping Disassembly. If applicable, remove the plate adapter from the pump. Untighten and remove the hex nuts that secure the lower flange of the discharge tubing to the case´s discharge flange.
Remove the column tube from the column adapter. Remove the column adapter from the bottom part of the soleplate. VSP Chem pump disassembly is complete. 8.1.1 Steam Jacket Piping Disassembly Remove the piping that connects the steam jacket of the lowermost column to the steam jacket of the discharge column.

Thoroughly clean all parts and dry with compressed air or a clean, lint-free cloth. Inspect all components for corrosion, erosion, pitting, and scoring. If required, replace with Ruhrpumpen O.E.M. genuine replacement parts. Visually check all individual parts for any damage.
