RANGER AIR 260MPX
®
PROBLEMS
(SYMPTOMS)
Air pressure stops intermittently
If for any reason you do not understand the test procedures or are unable to perform the tests/repairs safely, contact your
Lincoln Authorized Service Facility for technical troubleshooting assistance before you proceed.

POSSIBLE
CAUSE
1. Clutch not engaging.
2. If the air compressor stops when welding or
using auxiliary power, the total load may be too
much.
3. Oil level is low or has high moisture content.

TROUBLESHOOTING
RECOMMENDED
COURSE OF ACTION
1. Check clutch relay. Turn the machine
off by placing the OFF/RUN/START
switch in the OFF position. Allow at
least 1 minute for air pressure to
dissipate. Remove tension from the
belt. Verify the pulley on the clutch
spins easily with no voltage applied
to the clutch. Disconnect the clutch
leads from the harness and connect
to 12VDC. Verify the clutch has
engaged.
2. Clutch air gap too large. If clutch air
gap is found to be significantly
above factory specification of 0.4 to
0.6mm due to wear over time,
remove clutch armature (outermost
plate part) and remove the needed
amount of 0.1mm ring shims to
bring the assembly back into
specification. Reinstall clutch
armature LEFT HAND THREAD to
35 ft-lbs (Vanair spanner tool
T-0198). Reinstall 5/16-18
remaining bolt and nordlock
washer 18 ft-lbs.
3. Clutch 12VDC EM coil faulty - check
resistance across coil leads (two
clutch wires) which should be
about 3.2Ω. Zero or infinite
resistance indicates a failed coil.
4. Oil on clutch friction surfaces. (This
is more likely to cause slipping,
sudden drops and recoveries in
operating pressure which is audible
in compressor output) - If oil or
other lubricant is determined to
have contaminated clutch friction
surfaces a repair can be attempted
using brake cleaner or 99%
isopropyl alcohol. The clutch
armature may need removed to do
this effectively. Reassemble and
attempt to run the compressor up
to max 150psi, if the compressor
continues to slip, a new clutch is
needed.
5. Normal operation. Reduce
simultaneously loads applied to the
machine.
6. Confirm the oil level and verify
water is not present.
