Notes on breaking-in a new vehicle
To preserve the engine during the first 1000 miles
(1500 km):
Drive at varying road speeds and engine
R
speeds.
No faster than 85 mph (140 km/h).
R
Drive the vehicle in drive mode A or ;.
R
Shift to the next higher gear at the very latest
R
when the needle reaches the last third before
the red area in the tachometer.
Do not shift down manually in order to brake.
R
Avoid overstraining the vehicle, e.g. driving at
R
full throttle.
Do not depress the accelerator pedal past the
R
pressure point (kickdown).
Only increase the engine speed gradually and
R
accelerate the vehicle to full speed after
1000 miles (1500 km).
This also applies when the engine or parts of the
drivetrain have been replaced.
Please also observe the following breaking-in
notes:
In certain handling and driving safety systems,
R
the sensors adjust automatically while a cer-
tain distance is being driven after the vehicle
has been delivered or after repairs. Full sys-
tem effectiveness is only reached when this
teaching-in process has concluded.
Brake pads, brake disks and tires that are
R
either new or have been replaced achieve opti-
mum braking effect and grip only after the
vehicle has been driven several hundred kilo-
meters. Compensate the reduced braking
effect by applying greater force to the brake
pedal.
Notes on optimized acceleration
If all necessary requirements and activation con-
ditions are fulfilled, the best possible acceleration
can be achieved from a standstill.
Do not use optimized acceleration on public
roads. Individual wheels could spin and you could
lose control of the vehicle. There is an increased
risk of skidding and/or accident.
