installation wizard
A wizard specifically designed to guide a user through the
process of installing software. See wizard.
integrity, data integrity
Assurance that data is not modified by unauthorized persons
during storage or transmittal.
interface
A boundary across which two independent systems meet and act
on or communicate with each other. The term generally refers to a
hardware interface–the wires, plugs, and sockets that hardware
devices use to communicate with each other.
Internet address class
To efficiently administer the 32-bit IP address class space, IP
addresses are separated into three classes that describe networks
of varying sizes:
Class A–If the first octet of an IP address is less than 128, it is a
Class A address. A network with a Class A address can have up to
about 16 million hosts.
Class B–If the first octet of an IP address is from 128 to 191, it is a
Class B address. A network with a Class B address can have up to
64,000 hosts.
Class C–If the first octet of an IP address is from 192 to 223, it is a
Class C address. A network with a Class C address can have up to
254 hosts.
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF)
A large, open international community of network designers,
operators, vendors, and researchers concerned with the evolution
of the Internet architecture and the smooth operation of the
Internet.
intranet
A self-contained network that uses the same communications
protocols and file formats as the Internet.
Intrusion Detection System (IDS)
A class of networking products devoted to detecting, monitoring,
and blocking attacks from hackers. IDSs that operate on a host to
detect malicious activity on that host are called host-based IDSs.
