4 How to work with the IEEE 802.11 WLAN
option
The R&S SMW equipped with the option digital standard IEEE 802.11 WLAN allows
you to generate signals for different transmitter and receiver tests scenarios.
The following step-by-step instructions provide examples of some typical generic work-
flows and setups for working with this options.

4.1 Generating a 160 MHz 2x2 WLAN 802.11ax signal

The IEEE 802.11ac/ax uses MIMO technology, up to 160 MHz bandwidth and special
coding for increased throughput. The following options are required for the generation
of such a signal:
Option standard baseband generator (R&S SMW-B10)
Option R&S SMW-B13T
Frequency option (e.g. R&S SMW-B1003 and R&S SMW-B2003)
2x option baseband extension to 160 MHz RF bandwith (R&S SMW-K522)
2x option WLAN IEEE802.11ac/ax (R&S SMW-K86/142)
Optional, 2x option fading simulator (R&S SMW-B14)
Optional, option fading MIMO (R&S SMW-K74)
Optional, option AWGN (R&S SMW-K62)
The following step-by step instruction describes how to configure the instrument for
generating a 160 MHz 2x2 WLAN 802.11ac signal.
To configure the R&S SMW for a 160 MHz 2x2 MIMO WLAN 802.11ac/ax signal
generation
1. Configure the basebands in the "System Configuration > Fading/Baseband Config"
dialog to generate a 1x2x2 coupled sources signal.
For a detailed description of how to do that, refer to the R&S SMW user manual.
2. Configure the reference oscillator settings, depending on whether an external refer-
ence source is provided.
Select "External Reference Frequency Source" and configure the "Synchronization
Bandwidth" and the "External Reference Frequency" accordingly.
3. Set the power level and the frequency in the header display of the instrument.
4. Select an "IEEE 802.11 WLAN > Trigger in > Source > External Global Trigger".
5. In the "IEEE 802.11 WLAN > General > Transmit Antenna Setup" dialog set the
transmit antennas:
a) Set "Antennas > = 2".
b) Set "Output > O1 > Baseband A" and "Output > O2 > Baseband B".
