If t he 8 34 is t urned on in t he SELF TEST m ode and an error condi t i on exi st s in t he
834 or in a ROM pack , t he Power -Up t est di splays t he appropri at e error m essage.
In any ot her m ode, t he di splay reads 8 34 ERROR. In t hi s case, t he operat or should
t urn t he 8 34 off, change t he m ode set t i ng t o SELF TEST , t hen t urn t he 8 34 on
agai n t o see t he speci fi c error m essage.

Several 8 34 com ponent s are m ent i oned in t his sect i on . These com ponent s are
i dent i fi ed by li st i ng t he ci rcui t board assem bly num ber, t he com ponent num ber of
t he part on t he board , and t he 8 34 schem at i c num ber. For exam ple: A1 U373 [ 3 ]
refers t o com ponent num ber 0373 on pri nt ed ci rcui t board ( or assem bly ) A1 ,
shown on 8 34 schem at i c ( 3 ) . Schem at i cs for t he 8 34 are i ncluded in t he Servi ce

If ei t her of t hese m essages occur , t urn t he 8 34 off , rem ove t he ROM pack , t hen t urn t he 8 34
on agai n . If power - up is successfully com plet ed , t he problem is in t he ROM pack .
Explanat i on :

The ROM pack is i nt erferi ng wi t h t he 8 34's TTL dat a bus , and t he power
up check bet ween t he di splay syst em and cont rol syst em det ect ed t he
error .
Possi ble cause : 1 . The ROM j um pers are in t he wrong posi t i on .
2. Short in t he ROM ci rcui t board .
3. Defect i ve ROM part .

Act i on :
1 . Check t hat t he ROM size j um pers are correct .
2. Rem ove all ROMs t hen i nst all t he ROM pack in t he 8 34. If t he
error persi st s , replace t he ci rcui t board .
3. Rem ove all but one ROM t hen i nst all t he ROM pack . If
t he error persi st s, replace t he ROM . If power - up is
successfully com plet ed , repeat t hi s procedure wi t h t he
next ROM . Be sure t hat each ROM is in t he correct sock et .
