3.
Gasoline Engines: Turn the key-starter switch,
Figure 24, to the "OFF" position (3).
4.
DIESEL ENGINES: Pull the diesel stop control
out until the engine stops, then turn the key-starter
switch to the "OFF" position.
IMPORTANT:
Failure to turn the key-starter switch
to the "OFF" position after the engine stops will
result in the warning lights remaining on, causing
the battery to discharge.
OPERATING THE TRANSMISSION
AND P.T.O.
4 X 4 POWER REVERSING TRANSMISSION
Ford 420 and 535
The 4 x 4 power reversing transmission incorporates
two shift levers; a gearshift lever and a power reversing
lever, Figure 26. The gearshift lever is used to select one
of four gear ratios. The power reversing lever is used to
start the tractor in motion, stop the tractor, and reverse
the direction of travel.
CAUTION: A mechanical clutch is not
used in this transmission. The tractor will
roll when the gearshift levers are "in gear."
Therefore, always apply the parking brake
when the tractor is parked.
STARTING FORWARD TRAVEL:
With the engine
running at idle speed and the power reversing lever in
neutral:
1.
Shift to the desired gear ratio with the gearshift
lever.
2.
Move the power reversing lever forward for for-
ward travel.
3.
Use the throttle to control ground speed.
IMPORTANT:
An interlock device prevents shifting
the power reversing lever from neutral to forward
or reverse at engine speeds above 1650 rpm, or
when the engine is not running. Do not force the
power reversing lever into either forward or reverse.
Doing so may damage the linkage.
When operating in low temperatures with cold
transmission oil, the power reversing lever can be
shifted only at low engine idle. The transmission
can be shifted easily after the oil warms up.

TO CHANGE DIRECTION OF TRAVEL:
Let up on the throttle so engine rpm drops below
1200 rpm.
2. Apply the brakes, stop the tractor, and move the
power reversing lever to neutral.
Move the power reversing lever rearward for reverse
travel.
TO CHANGE FROM ONE GEAR RATIO
TO ANOTHER:
Decrease engine speed to low idle and move the
power reversing lever to neutral.
2.
Stop the tractor.
3.
Shift the gearshift lever to the desired gear.
