GENERAL MAINTENANCE
COOLING SYSTEM
Checking Coolant Level: The system should be kept
filled with clear water with a rust inhibitor.
CAUTION: The cooling system operates
under pressure which is controlled by the
radiator cap, It is dangerous to remove the
cap while the system is hot. Always turn
the cap slowly to the first stop and allow
pressure to escape before removing the
cap completely.
IMPORTANT:
Alcohol-type antifreeze is not recom-
mended. .Do not mix an alcohol-type solution with
permanent or Ford long-life type antifreeze,
Draining the Cooling System:
Drain the radiator and
engine block as indicated below:
Plain Water
Drain, flush and refill every 6
months, add rust inhibitor.
Permanent Antifreeze
(Regular Ethlene Glycol)
Change every 12
months
Long-Life (Ford) Antifreeze
Change every 24
months
To drain the system:
1.
Remove the radiator cap and open the drain valve
at both the radiator and the engine block, as shown
in Figure 84.
2.
Close the two drain valves and slowly refill the
system.
3.
Clean the radiator cap and seal, and install the
cap.
4.
Run the engine until normal operating temperature
is reached, then stop the engine and check the
coolant level.
IMPORTANT: Do not run the engine when the
cooling system is empty, and do not add cold
water or cold antifreeze solution if the engine is
hot.

Fan Belt: Check the condition and tension of the fan
belt every 300 hours. Install a new belt if the old belt is
frayed or cracked.
To check belt tension, apply 25 lbs. pressure on the fan
belt midway between the alternator and crankshaft
pulleys. An old belt should deflect about 3/4 inch, a new
belt about 1/2 inch.
To adjust belt tension:
1.
Loosen the alternator mounting bolts (1), Figure
85.
2.
Pry the alternator away from the engine and tighten
the mounting bolts.
IMPORTANT: When prying the alternator away
from the engine, apply pressure at the front housing
only. Do not pry on the rear housing or damage
may result.
