5-5. Engine General Information

Check all engine fluids daily.
Engine must be cold and on a level sur-
face.
Automatic Shutdown System
Automatic shutdown system stops en-
gine if oil pressure is too low or coolant
temperature is too high.

This unit has a low oil pressure shut-
down switch. However, some condi-
tions may cause engine damage be-
fore the engine shuts down. Check oil

NOTICE − Do not use gasoline. Gasoline
will damage engine.
Add fresh diesel fuel before starting (see
engine maintenance label for fuel specifica-
tions). Leave filler neck empty to allow room
for expansion.

Check coolant level in radiator before start-

Run-In
NOTICE − Diesel engines in Miller equip-
ment are meant to operate optimally at
moderate to rated load. Using light or no
load for extended periods of time may
cause wetstacking or engine damage.
Follow run-in procedure in engine manu-
al. If unburned fuel and oil collect in ex-
haust pipe during run-in, see Section 11.

until coolant level is between Cold Full and
Hot Full levels. If recovery tank coolant level

tor filler neck.
Cold Weather
To improve cold weather starting:
Use Preheat switch (see Section 6-2).
Keep battery in good condition. Store bat-
tery in warm area.
Use fuel formulated for cold weather (die-
sel fuel can gel in cold weather). Contact
local fuel supplier for fuel information.
Use correct grade oil for cold weather
(see engine manual).
Use engine block heater if applicable (see
Section 6-10).
