Typographic Conventions
Meaning
The names of
commands, files, and
directories; on-screen
computer output.
What you type, when
contrasted with on-
screen computer
output.
Book titles, new words
or terms, words to be
emphasized.
Variable expressions;
replaced with a real
name or value.
In system output
examples, brackets
indicate optional
values. If several values
are placed inside
brackets, any or none
of them can be
displayed.
Brackets are also used
in system prompts to
enclose the response
choices.
