3.7 System Cooling

Fans

Fan speed is controlled by a system temperature setting in BMC. If a fan fails, the remaining
fans will ramp up to full speed. Replace any failed fan at your earliest convenience with the
same type and model.
Changing a System Fan
1. Determine which fan is failing. If possible, use BMC. If not, remove the chassis cover
while the power is on, and examine the fans to determine which one has failed.
2. Remove power from the system as described in Section 3.1.
3. Remove the fan cable from the midplane for the failed fan.
4. Lift the fan housing up and out of the chassis.
5. Push the fan up from the bottom.
6. Put the new fan back into the chassis and reconnect the cable.
7. Power on the system to confirm that the fan is working properly before replacing the
chassis cover.
