ECG COLOUR CODES AND PLACEMENT
CHEST LEAD PLACEMENT
Lead Electrode placement
4th right intercostal space at
V1
the sternal border.
4th left intercostal space at the
V2
sternal border.
Midway between position V2 and
position V4.
V3
5th left intercostal space in the
midclavicular line (MCL).
V4
At the anterior axillary line (AAL)
at the same horizontal level as
V5 position V4.
At midaxillary line (MAL) at the
same horizontal level as position V4.

PATIENT PREPARATION

The quality of an ECG is dependent
on the preparation and the
resistance between the skin and the
electrode. To ensure a good quality
ECG and minimize the skin/
electrode resistance, remember the
following points:
1. Ensure the patient is warm and
relaxed.
2. Shave electrode area before
cleaning, if required.
3. Thoroughly clean the area with
alcohol.
4. Allow skin to dry prior to applying
electrode.
