Composable Fabric Ports: Twelve MPO24 ports to connect to as many as six fabric modules. The upper ports are
labeled E1 through E6 and the lower ports are labeled W1 through W6. You will connect E1 and W1 to one fabric
module, E 2 and W2 to another fabric module, and so on.
FM 1006 Expansion Ports: Six MPO24 ports to connect other FM 1006 modules, thereby extending the fabric,
connecting many (7 or more) fabric modules. The upper ports are labeled EX1 through EX3 and the lower ports are
labeled WX1 through WX3. You will connect EX1-EX3 ports to the WX1-WX3 ports on the next FM 1006 and the
WX1-WX3 ports to the EX1-EX3 ports on the previous FM 1006.

FM 1006 Cabling Guidelines and Restrictions

This sections describes how to cable your FM 1006, which consists of fabric port connections and expansion port
connections.
Loopbacks must be inserted in all unused fabric and expansion ports.
Expansion ports: Require loopback R1N44A.
Fabric ports: Require loopback R1N96A. These loopbacks enable you to create a full mesh fabric in which all fabric
modules are directly interconnected, allowing packets to go between any two fabric modules without requiring a
latency-inducing hop through a fabric module.
25 G Fabrics
Full mesh fabric size limit: 11 fabric modules
Loopbacks must be installed on all unused FM 1006 fabric ports. For example, if you have four fabric modules
connected using FM 1006 ports E1/W1, E2/W2, E3/W3, and E4/W4, then you install loopbacks on ports E5/W5
and E6/W6.
Guidelines and Restrictions
If you need to install more than one fabric loopback, cable the fabric modules to the FM 1006 so that you
can install the loopbacks in adjacent ports for maximum bandwidth efficiency.
For applications requiring two FM 1006 modules, you should split the fabric module connections between
the two FM 1006 modules as evenly as possible for maximum bandwidth efficiency. For example, if you are
connecting seven fabric modules to two FM 1006 modules, connect four fabric modules to one and three
fabric modules to the other. Install loopbacks in all unused FM 1006 fabric ports.

Cables for FM 1006

FM 1006 modules connect to FM 2072 and other fabric modules through MTP cables that look as follows:
Figure 2: FM1006 Fabric Interconnect Cable
Fabric modules connect to the FM 1006 passive optical module using a breakout cable that muxes signals from three 40
Gb QSFP transceivers into a single MTP 24 connector.
For information on supported cables, refer to the document, HPE Composable Fabric Support Matrix.
