Overview: Network Port Cabling and Port Type

The FM 2072 fabric module supports Composable Fabric connections and access connections from any of the SFP+ ports
(1-48) or QSFP+ ports (49-54). However, you should follow the highly recommended fabric cabling as described in the
chapters that follow. Any ports not used for the fabric can be used as access ports. Additionally, you can change the port
type between fabric and access for any of the ports.
The following figure illustrate the ports:
NOTE: Each QSFP+ contains four ports (for example, 49.1 - 49.4).
For port details, including supported port speeds, see Front Panel SFP+ and QSFP+ Ports.
Creating the Composable Fabric
A Composable Fabric connects two or more Composable Fabric modules, either directly by cabling module-to-module for
fabrics that contain 2-7 modules or through FM 1006 passive interconnect modules for fabrics that contain at least three
fabric modules. If your fabric will eventually exceed seven fabric modules, you may want to plan ahead and use FM1006
modules now.
Fabric Deployment
You can deploy an HPE Composable Fabric using either FM 1006 passive interconnect modules or by directly connecting
fabric modules (direct connect).
If you are creating a new fabric or adding a fabric module to an existing fabric using FM 1006 passive interconnect
modules, proceed as described in Creating a Composable Fabric Using FM 1006 Passive Interconnect Modules.
If you are creating a new fabric by directly connecting fabric modules (direct connect), proceed as described in
Creating a Direct Connect Composable Fabric.
If you are adding a fabric module to an existing fabric by directly connecting fabric modules (direct connect), proceed
as described in Adding a Module to an Existing Fabric.
Changing the Port Type: Fabric versus Access
This feature enables you to configure specific ports as either an access or fabric port type. To change the port type, go to
the Ports page of the Composable Fabric Manager UI, select one or more ports to change, and then select Access or Fabric
from a drop-down.
NOTE: Before the port type of any port can be changed:
The port must be disabled.
The port must not be part of any configuration. If the port is part of any configuration, it must be removed from the
configuration. For example: user LAG, VLAN, port mirror, port security, tunnel config, or ACL.
