5.1

Purpose

The devices of the SCALANCE XCM-100 product group enable cost-effective setup of Industrial
Ethernet networks with media transitions. The use of a SCALANCE XCM-100 Media Converter is
especially recommended for the following tasks:
• In a network with twisted pair cables, a connection is to be made with fiber-optic cables, but
the device in question does not have an FO port.
• In a redundant ring with twisted pair lines, a section is to be implemented with fiber-optic
cables. This requires the two media converters to be connected in series, which is possible
with devices of the SCALANCE XCM-100 product group.
• A device without FO port should be integrated into a network segment with fiber-optic cables.
