If operation of the phones output 1/2 is desired, the Dual Phones mode has to be switched on.
The menu has the additional option to turn off the rear outputs as soon as PH 1/2 is plugged in.
Default is Mute On when plugged.
While these outputs are praised as ideal head-
phone outputs, eventually as well as technically
they also are ideal line outputs.
In case the output should operate as line output,
an adapter TRS plug to RCA phono plugs, or
TRS plug to TS plugs is required.
The pin assignment follows international stand-
ards. The left channel is connected to the tip, the
right channel to the ring of the TRS jack/plug.
RME has a history of phones outputs working
perfectly as line outputs. The Extreme Power phones outputs of the ADI-2/4 Pro SE continue this
legacy by delivering exceptional performance with widest compatibility and versatility. For exam-
ple turning on Balanced TRS Phones mode, the two TRS jacks on the front perfectly serve as
high-quality TRS balanced line outputs.

21.5 PH Out 3/4

The second 2-channel DAC in the ADI-2/4 Pro SE realizes a completely independent headphone
output, PH 3/4. Channels 3/4 are available on the front as 1/4" TRS (stereo) jack, and as Penta-
conn, see below. In any mode 3/4 can be set to any input, no matter which input is currently used
by outputs 1/2. Using the SRC on 3/4's input it can even run clock independent from output 1/2.
The Extreme Power output stage is fully identical for PH 1/2 and PH 3/4. Both phones outputs
have 3 output levels to choose from: IEM (+1 dBu), Lo-Power (+7 dBu), und Hi-Power (+19 dBu).
Output PH 3/4 can also be used as unbalanced line output, see PH Out 1/2.
The menu includes an option to turn off the rear outputs as soon as a connector is plugged into
the PH 3/4 jack. Default is Mute On when plugged.
21.6 Balanced Phones via Pentaconn
Pentaconn is still relatively new, but already widely used. The plug has replaced the previous,
rather clunky and for light headphones too heavy XLR 4-pin as the standard for balanced phones.
The Pentaconn jack simplifies the use of a balanced-cabled headphone enormously, because it
also features plug detection. Therefore the ADI-2/4 Pro SE automatically switches to Balanced
Phones mode when a Pentaconn plug is inserted.
The use of headphones with 3-wire standard cabling is not recommended, as it requires properly
wired adapters to prevent shorting the balanced output stages. Plus it does not give any ad-
vantage. Headphones that are directly provided with Pentaconn are always wired 'Balanced'.
!
The Pentaconn output is Balanced, and should therefore only be used Balanced.
