A TIM 4 can be connected not only to a S7-400-CPU over its MPI port, but in principle with
every S7-300 CPU, in other words, also with the CPU types 317, 318 and 319 and with the
CPU 315-2 PN/DP with which a TIM 4 cannot be installed as a CP in the S7-300 rack.
S7-400 with one WAN attachment
The following figure shows the simplest configuration for an S7-400 with one connection to a
WAN over a TIM 4 with integrated modem.

If none of the integrated modems of the TIM 4 can be used, a TIM 4 without integrated
modem can be used. A suitable modem or other transmission device can be connected to
the combined RS-232/RS-485 port of the TIM 4V.
S7-400 with two WAN attachments
If two WAN connections are required, another external modem can be connected to the TIM
4, for example, a SINAUT ST7 modem. The TIM 4 and MD2, MD3 or MD4 SINAUT modem
are mounted on a separate S7-300 rail. The TIM 4 is connected to the CPU over its MPI
interface. The following figure shows the configuration described.
