2.2 Separate or Combined Oil Systems, Dif‐
ferentiation
Transmission with Combined Oil System
♦ The oil chambers inside the front final drive -3- and inside the
transfer case -1- are consolidated via the protective pipe -2-.
♦ The side shaft runs in gear oil in the protective pipe.
Transmission with Separated Oil System
♦ The protective pipe -2- is free of oil, the transfer case -1- and
the front final drive -3- as sealed with a shaft seal to side shaft.

Special tools and workshop equipment required
♦ Pressurized Gearbox Oil Filler Kit - VAS6617-
♦ Used Oil Collection and Extraction Unit - VAS6622-
♦ Protective eyewear
Caution
♦ Risk of damaging transfer case and the front axle differ‐
ential through incorrect oil level.
♦ Depending on the version there are transmissions with
separate or combined oil systems.
♦ For vehicles with combined oil systems the steps for it
must be followed, because the oil level from the transfer
case and the front axle differential are dependent on one
another.
Procedure
• Gear oil temperature: approximately 20 °C (68 °F) (room tem‐
perature).
• The engine must be switched off when working.
• Move the vehicle onto a four-column shop hoist or over a work
pit so it is completely level.
• Transmission in "P".
• The parking brake button should be activated to close the
electro-mechanical parking brake.
