13 Mechanical Diagnosis

Condition
Engine will not crank
Starter motor turns but engine does
not crank
Engine cranks but fails to start
Possible Cause
Electrical problem
Defective starter solenoid
Defective starter
Water in cylinders
Starter clutch defective
Fuel solenoid not energized
Fuel solenoid defective or stuck
Fuel injection pump defective
Glow plugs defective
No fuel or wrong fuel
Electric fuel pump not operating
Air in fuel system
Compression low
Injection nozzles defective
Incorrect timing
Air cleaner clogged
Exhaust plugged
Remedy
Check and repair electrical system
Replace solenoid
Repair starter
Check for hydrostatic lock. Remove
injectors and turn engine slowly
Replace
Check 8D and 8DP and CHF
circuits and fuel solenoid pull-in
relay. Check that controller is
configured for correct Engine Type.
Refer to appropriate Microprocessor
Diagnostic Manual.
Replace
Replace pump
Replace
Fill with proper fuel
• Check fuel pump is running and 8
to 10 psig (55 to 69 kPa). Repair
or replace fuel pump.
• If the fuel will run and be audible,
but is not priming the system: The
gasket around the edge of the
fuel filter bowl may be out of
place allowing air to be sucked
into the system. Please refer to
Service Bulletin SB 993 for more
information.
