x86 or AMD64/EM64T X Server May Lock Up on HP Workstations
When Running Accelerated 3D Graphics
DESCRIPTION
The X server may lock up under heavy use of 3D graphics on HP workstations when running the Red
Hat Enterprise Linux 3 WS Update 5 kernel. You may see "NVRM: bad caching on address..." in
/var/log/messages, or you may see a panic in __change_page_attr. Both issues are referred to as
the "cache aliasing" issue. Please refer to /opt/hp/graphics/nvidia/nvidia-docs/README.txt for
further details.

SCOPE

This issue is seen on systems that meet all the following:
HP workstations
nVidia graphics driver less than version 7676
RHEL3U5 WS 64-bit

RESOLUTION

If the unconfigure script has not been run yet, there is still a copy of the original file that can be set
aside and manually copied back into place.
1. Update your kernel to RHEL3U6 (2.4.21-37) or greater, AND
2. Update your nVidia driver to version 8xxx, OR
3. Update your nVidia driver to version 7676 and add the following line to your /etc/modules.conf:
options NVreg_UseCPA=1
This will ensure that the 7676 driver enables the change_page_attr kernel2
NOTE: If you update to an nVidia driver version 8xxx in the future, please remember to remove the
"options NVreg_UseCPA=1" from your /etc/modules.conf.
