AMD64/EM64T X Server May Lock Up on HP Workstations When
Running Accelerated 3D Graphics

DESCRIPTION

The X server may lock up under heavy use of 3D graphics on HP workstations when running the Red
Hat Enterprise Linux 4 WS Update 1 kernel. You may see "NVRM: bad caching on address..." in
/var/log/messages or you may see a panic in __change_page_attr. Both issues are referred to as the
"cache aliasing" issue. Please refer to /opt/hp/graphics/nvidia/nvidia-docs/README.txt for further
details.

SCOPE

This issue is seen on systems that meet all the following:
HP workstations
•
nVidia graphics driver less than version 7676
•
RHEL4u1 WS 64-bit
•
RESOLUTION
1. Update your kernel to RHEL4U2 + RHSA-2005:808 (2.6.9-22.0.1) or greater, AND
2. Update your nVidia driver to version 8xxx, OR
3. Update your nVidia driver to version 7676 and add the following line to your
etc/modprobe.conf: options NVreg_UseCPA=1
This will ensure that the 7676 driver enables the change_page_attr kernel interface.
