Advanced Multiple Chassis Configuration – Dante Multicast
Multicast Overview
Similar to how VIP operates, each source can be sent to multiple endpoints using only one of the available
streams . This is much more efficient . It is unlike Unicast, which needs to send the same stream to each
chassis separately using another stream and increasing network traffic . However, Multicast does require
specific networking gear that can handle the necessary configuration (limit of 64 zones) .
Multicast is needed on larger systems because it can handle 5+ chassis, as opposed to the four in which
Unicast is suited (design dependent) . If you have an eight chassis Multi-Chassis system and would like to
send the same three sources to each chassis simultaneously, this will use three streams . With Unicast, this
would require 21 streams, therefore it could not be accomplished . This is also known as Fanout .

» Layer 2/3 switches for all connected IPD devices
Chassis Multicast Sending Capabilities:
» EL-IPD-MTX-8CH – 12 stereo streams
» EL-IPD-PRE-MSI – 16 stereo streams
» EL-IPD-PRE-SSI – 4 stereo streams
Example 1: One source sent across 3 extender chassis'
In this example, one source can be sent to all necessary chassis and only uses one available stream . The
Unicast counterpart, although much easier/quicker to deploy, would use three of the available streams .

In this example, we send Streaming to three AMP-EXT chassis. In Unicast, this would require three streams
to accomplish. But in Multicast, each source only takes one stream, no matter how many chassis receive.
