Do not mix types and brands of coolant.
Do not mix brands and types of SCAs.
Do not mix SCAs and Extenders.
Only use SCAs or Extender approved by coolant
manufacturer and compatible with coolant.
Adding the SCA to Heavy-Duty Coolant
at the Initial Fill
Coolants conforming to ASTM D4985 and not
conforming D6210 require the addition of SCA at
initial fill.
Use the equation that is in Table 23 to determine the
amount of SCA that is required when the cooling
system is initially filled.

V × 0.07 = X
V is the total volume of the cooling system.
X is the amount of SCA that is required.
Table 24 is an example for using the equation that is
in Table 23 .

Adding The SCA to The Heavy-Duty
Coolant For Maintenance
Heavy-duty antifreeze of all types REQUIRE periodic
additions of an SCA.
Test the antifreeze periodically for the concentration
of SCA. For the interval, refer to the Operation and
Maintenance Manual, "Maintenance Interval
Schedule" (Maintenance Section). Cooling System
Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) Test/Add.
Additions of SCA are based on the results of the test.
The size of the cooling system determines the
amount of SCA that is needed.
Use the equation that is in Table 25 to determine the
amount of SCA that is required, if necessary:

Note: Before corrosion inhibitors can be effective the
cooling system must be free from rust, scale and
deposits.
• Drain the cooling system.

Most commercial cooling system cleaning agents are
corrosive and their use is not recommended by

Perkins.
The cooling system must be thoroughly flushed with
clean water after using cleaning agents.
Cleaning agents for marine or industrial cooling sys-
tem must not be used, these areveryaggressiveand
can cause damage to cooling system components.
• Run the engine for approximately 30 minutes and
• Take a sample of the solution from the cooling
• Allow the sample to sit for at least 30 minutes and
• Flush the system with clean water.
