Error Messages

As with any sophisticated office product, errors may sometimes occur. If this
happens, your MFC often identifies the problem and displays an error message. The
table below explains the most common error messages.
You can correct most problems by yourself. If you need additional help, call the
Brother Fax-Back System.

BLACK INK EMPTY
COLOR INK EMPTY
PHOTO INK EMPTY
BLACK NEAR EMPTY One or both ink
COLOR NEAR EMPTY cartridges are running
PHOTO NEAR EMPTY out of ink.
CHECK PAPER
PRESS START KEY
COMM. ERROR
COVER OPEN
DISCONNECTED
DOCUMENT JAM

Cause
One or both of the ink
cartridges are out of ink.
MFC is out of paper, or
paper is not set properly
in the cassette.
Poor phone line quality
caused communication
error.
Top cover is not closed
completely.
The other party or the
receiving fax machine
terminated the call.
Documents were not inserted
or fed properly, or document
was longer than about
40 inches (90 cm).
Solutions
Caution: Using the MFC when
the LCD shows INK
EMPTY may cause
permanent damage.
Replace the ink cartridges.
See p. 24-16.
Order a new ink cartridge.
See p. ii.
Place paper in cassette—OR—
Remove paper and reinstall it
correctly. Then press
See p. 2-7.
Try the call again. If problem
continues, call Telephone
Company to check your phone
line.
Open, then close the cover.
Try to transmit or receive again.
See p. 24-4.
