SECTION 5: BECOMING FAMILIAR WITH YOUR COBALT 400 MOTOR Your Wattage Wild Cat 400 EP ARF is powered by the Wattage Super Cobalt 400 Direct Drive motor. This motor is a high-quality alternative to lower powered, closed end-bell motors, and more expensive specialty motors. The Super Cobalt 400 Direct Drive motor features a 3.2mm (1/8") shaft and a bolt pattern that can match either 05 or 400 size...
  • Page 8: Section 6: Breaking In The Super Cobalt 400 Motor

SECTION 6: BREAKING IN THE SUPER COBALT 400 MOTOR Taking time to break in the motor now will result in increased motor performance and longevity. You can either secure the motor to the fuselage during the break-in process or you can secure the motor to a test stand. If you secure the motor to the fuselage, make sure to hold the fuselage securely during the break-in process.

M3 flat washer. STEP 2: ALIGNING THE HORIZONTAL STABILIZER Using a builder's triangle and a pencil, carefully measure and draw a vertical centerline across the top of the stabilizer. Visit our website at http://watt-age.globalhobby.com for information on other Wattage products...
  • Page 10 Slide the stabilizer into the mounting slot and temporarily align it. The stabilizer should be pushed forward completely and, when viewed from above through the vertical stabilizer mounting slot, the centerline you drew on top of the stabilizer should be centered with the back of the fuselage. IMPORTANT When the stabilizer is slid into place, make sure that the back of the fuselage is not closed up.
  • Page 11 With the stabilizer in place and aligned, use a builder's triangle to check and make sure that the vertical stabilizer is aligned 90º to the horizontal stabilizer. Visit our website at http://watt-age.globalhobby.com for information on other Wattage products...
  • Page 12: Section 8: Hinging The Control Surfaces

While holding the vertical stabilizer firmly in place, use a pencil to draw a line on each side of the stabilizer where it meets the top of the fuselage. Remove the stabilizer from the fuselage. Using a modeling knife, carefully cut away and remove the covering material from below the lines you drew.

Using 220 grit sandpaper with a sanding block, sand the edges of the plastic mount smooth and straight. Visit our website at http://watt-age.globalhobby.com for information on other Wattage products...
  • Page 14 Position the landing gear wire and plastic mount onto the bottom of the fuselage. When aligned correctly, the back edge of the plastic mount should be even with the front of the wing saddle and centered between the fuselage sides. When satisfied with the alignment, remove the landing gear wire and the plastic mount.
  • Page 15: Section 10: Motor & Cowling Installation

STEP 1: INSTALLING THE MOTOR Using a 5/64" hex wrench, remove the propeller adapter from the motor and set it aside. IMPORTANT The propeller adapter must be removed to install the motor. Visit our website at http://watt-age.globalhobby.com for information on other Wattage products...
  • Page 16 Slide the motor into position and line up the holes in the front of the motor with the slot in the motor plate. Secure the motor into place using two M3 x 8mm machine screws and two M3 flat washers. Tighten the screws firmly to hold the motor securely into place.
  • Page 17: Section 11: Control Systems Installation

When satisfied with the alignment, mark and drill 5/64" diameter pilot holes through the elevator half for the control horn mounting screws. Visit our website at http://watt-age.globalhobby.com for information on other Wattage products...
  • Page 18 IMPORTANT Before installing the control horn in the next procedure, apply several drops of thin C/A into the holes and allow the C/A to fully cure. The C/A will harden the surrounding balsa, making the mounting area stronger. Install the control horn and backplate using two M2 x 12mm machine screws, being careful not to overtighten them. Repeat the previous procedures to install the second control horn and backplate onto the other elevator half.
  • Page 19 Remove the masking tape from the rudder and double-check that the servo horn and the rudder are still centered. If the rudder is not centered, adjust the clevis until the rudder is centered. Visit our website at http://watt-age.globalhobby.com for information on other Wattage products...
  • Page 20 STEP 3: INSTALLING THE AILERON CONTROL SYSTEM Using 220 grit sandpaper with a sanding block, sand the edges of the aileron servo tray smooth and straight. Using a modeling knife, cut a small hole in the top of the wing, directly above the aileron servo cutout, just large enough for the aileron servo lead to fit through.
  • Page 21: Section 12: Final Assembly

For a more realistic appearance, carefully paint the pilot bust using your favorite colors. This takes some time, but really dresses up the airplane. To dress up the cockpit, you can paint the inside of the cockpit flat black, too. Visit our website at http://watt-age.globalhobby.com for information on other Wattage products...
  • Page 22 Using a pair of scissors, carefully cut the front and back of the pilot bust to fit over the elevator and rudder servos. We cut the pilot bust so that when the pilot was installed, the base of the pilot was about 1/4" off the cockpit floor. This prevents having to cut all the way through the top of the pilot.
  • Page 23 Position the fairing onto the wing, as shown. The sides of the fairing should be even with the sides of the fuselage and there should be a 1/16" gap between the front of the fairing and the fuselage. Visit our website at http://watt-age.globalhobby.com for information on other Wattage products...

C/G back farther than 1/4" behind the main spar. Balance the Wild Cat 400 EP ARF with the flight battery installed. Turn the airplane upside down, place your fingers over the main spar (at the fuselage sides), and carefully lift the airplane.

SECTION 15: CONTROL THROWS We recommend setting up the Wild Cat 400 EP ARF using the control throws listed below. These control throws are suggested for initial test-flying because they will allow the airplane to fly smoother and make it easier to control.
  • Page 26: Section 16: Preflight Check & Safety

SECTION 16: PREFLIGHT CHECK & SAFETY Check the operation of the throttle. To do this, do the following: A) Plug the flight battery into the ESC and turn on the radio system. WARNING Do not turn the receiver on unless the transmitter is turned on first. Always turn the transmitter on first. Never allow hands or clothing to get in the way of the propeller when the radio is turned on.

SECTION 17: FLYING THE WILD CAT 400 EP ARF The Wild Cat 400 EP ARF is designed for those pilots who are experienced at flying sport models. It is not a trainer. If you do not feel comfortable about test-flying the airplane, don't hesitate to ask someone more experienced for help.
  • Page 28: Section 18: Wild Cat 400 Ep Trim Chart

SECTION 18: WILD CAT 400 EP TRIM CHART After you have test-flown and done the initial trim changes to the airplane, use this trimming chart to begin trimming your airplane. Following and adhering to this chart will result in the ability to diagnose trim problems and correct those problems using the simple adjustments shown below.
