6.2 Safety instructions for Voltage Protection Modules
Electric shock as a result of excessive motor speed while the VPM runs up
The protective function of the Voltage Protection Module only becomes active 1 s after the
pulse enable. If the motor accelerates in this phase to speeds higher than the speed at the start
of field weakening, then the high electromotive force (EMF) can result in device damage and
voltage flashovers.
Contact with live parts can result in death or serious injury.
• Only operate the motor below the field weakening threshold speed while the VPM is

An excessively high voltage will damage the insulation resulting in death or severe injury.
• Do not connect any motors whose electromotive force (EMF) exceeds the permissible value
• Route the cables so that they are protected to rule out any damage.
Electric shock due to using unsuitable third-party motors
VPM can be used with third-party motors. If, when using third-party motors, the VPM does not
limit the DC link voltage, this can result in death or severe injury.
• Please observe the following when using third-party motors:
Danger to life through automatic start of the drive
An uncontrolled automatic start of the drive can result in fatal accidents.
• Take precautions against an automatic start of the drive.

Using motors that are not short-circuit proof in conjunction with a Voltage Protection Module
can result in damage.
• Only use motor that are short-circuit proof.
